Fair enough, Butterfly. I would definitely agree that Koreans are all in all far more open & frank than Japanese. As for "a lot of" whites being racist, well, I sure as hell hope you're wrong....

You must be joking ...

I've seen some and had first hand experience of quite disgusting racism in my country, from being p1ssed on from a bridge by a group of yobs as I walked under it with my group of Japanese students, at the same time listening to their diddle-eye-jo taunts and hiroshima jokes, to hearing constantly of attacks on foreign students in the UK to reading of the recent terrible stories of slave labor in the UK, in the aftermath of the death of a group of Chinese illegal workers as they picked shellfish in an area notoriously dangerous for its tides.

I'm not joking, I only wish I was, but I have never been subjected to the abuse I have seen foreigners suffer in my country, and though I have heard very unpleasant stories in Korea, and I am not in denial of them, they are certainly no worse than the vile acts I have read of and experienced in the UK.

Some Koreans are extremely arrogant and racist, well, just some people are I suppose.

i was trying to explain slavery and US anti-black attitudes to a kid in my advanced class the other day... he was remarkably pro-black, but it was so funny...

"i like black people, they are nice, they make good rap music"...

but i also concur with the fear thing. i was in a jim-jil-bang once and was wondering why there's so many place names in korea that end in "DONG" because there's no damn dongs in this country.

seriously, like grapes on toothpicks. i've never felt so blessed.

If the black in question is very rich, famous or a sportsperson the Korean usually won't make any racial slights whatsoever. Guess it relates to the "Weak to the strong, strong to the weak" value indelibly ingrained into Koreans.

No, Koreans are not as vehemently racist as the worst supermacists you'll find in the west. They just haven't tapped into the anti-discriminatory zeitgeist of the modern English speaking world yet. You watch the boxing commentators here and they'll still say things like (exact translation) "And you wonder when a white champion's going to be coming along to challenge the likes of Roy Jones don't you?" without realising, in their extremely non-progressive way, such remarks are 40 years out of place.

Yes we can't defend the racist attitudes that live on ghost like in England. Anyone hear what 'Big' Ron Atkinson said last week? He ought to have been shot considering the crap black players have had to put up with for twenty years. It still sickens me that one of my idols John Barnes had bananas thrown at him at Goodison Park just 15 years ago.

Part of it is because black people, as a culture, tend to wave their hands around a lot more and sometimes talk louder.

That makes Koreans nervous.

And Koreans don't do that? I went to a wedding in Korea and someone was yapping on their phone during the ceremony! Shocked

I went to the bank and people are practically screaming into their cellphones....And their behavior doesn't make them nervous...interesting Confused

Well, worse than being shot, he has become the laughing stock of the whole nation, he's a joke now.

Loud talking, yes..... it's the hand waving and gestures that Koreans get freaked out by.

Seriously. Some students talked about that one.

Who are they seeing anyway? G.I.s or hmm the Nigerians from Itaewon (I think Nigerian, I could be wrong) or some other group. I know some people do wave their hands and such I suppose, but I don't see how wierd that is. I don't think I see much handwaving among blacks that I know or have seen but hey....anything to make people seem weird, huh? Crying or Very sad

I would definately say it's Nigerians in some areas, but also what they see on music videos, etc.

Hollywood doesn't help -- that's for sure.

A strange, related to this topic, thing is sometimes expressed by the kids. As an "insult" I've been caled "African" a few times.

Student (perhaps elementary or middle school boy): You from Africa? Hahahahaha........ and several other kids will find this funny?

You are from Nigeria? hahahaha

Strange.

Sometimes I wish I could take a kid like that and bring him to a country like Nigeria. Imagine how weird that would that be Exclamation
