I'm not really sure why Japan or Korea really care what people who speak English call the Liancort Rocks or the Sea of Japan in English.
I certainly don't care what they are called in Japanese or Korean.
I do love to see old ( or new, for that matter ) maps. |

| I generally like living in South Korea and have met a lot of great people here, but can someone explain why I feel so annoyed, sarcastic and non-supportive of the "East Sea"? |

| It's not as ridiculous as Chinas claims to the sea. They've literally said that they 'own' certain parts of the ocean. Yeah, like you can own the ocean. The ocean owns us. |

Indigenous peoples of the Americas said the same thing about land when Europeans arrived and look how that turned out. |

I can tell you why it bugs me. It's an attempt to push a Korea-centric point of view on the entire world about something completely meaningless.
It makes perfect sense for the Sea of Japan to be called 동해 (East Sea) in Korean as it is the sea that has been located directly to the east of the overwhelming majority of Korean speakers. It is not located directly to the east of anyone who speaks any other language.
I have no problem with using the local name for that particular sea while speaking the local language. Their language, their name. But as an English speaker and English teacher I cannot in good conscience call it anything other than the most widely internationally accepted English name, the Sea of Japan. When Koreans bristle, I point out that as an American, so far as I'm concerned the East Sea is the Atlantic Ocean. When they ask me "So where's the Sea of Korea then???" I remind them that not only is there no Sea of America either, but that the Korean Bay is conveniently located between North Korea and China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korea_Bay).
Maybe Americans should start an angry letter writing campaign to the UN to get the name of the Gulf of Mexico changed to the Southeast Sea, or better yet, the Sea of the United States of America. Damn those Mexicans for stealing our sea! |

You should fully understand both sides of an argument before making, what turns out be, a very uninformed statement that assumes one side feels a certain way. Maybe you should look into the real reason why Korea is pushing for the name to return to East Sea or Sea of Korea. It is a deeper issue than just "Korean nationalism," and the "US does not want to call it the Gulf of America" statement makes you look like you have absolutely zero information on the topic and are just throwing out a statement based on what you have read on Dave's.
If you want to learn more about the subject than as a university graduate, I assume you have better research skills than Wikipedia, use them. |

| If there is a good reason why the rest of the world should be calling it The East Sea, then why don't you enlighten us? You might have added some heat to this discussion, Grumpy Senator, but not a hell of a lot of light. |

I always tell people it's the Sea of Japan in English because it makes sense. If Japan did not exist, it would be the Pacific Ocean. It is called the Sea of Japan because the existence of Japan marks it off from the larger body of water to which it is connected.
The issue will never appeal to the average U.S. citizen (and, perhaps, the rest of the world as well), because they couldn't care less. There is the Gulf of Mexico that has a shoreline nearly half of which touches the U.S., but who bloody well cares? And that's what we call it IN ENGLISH! It could just have easily been called the Sea of Cuba (which would be a whole lot cooler).
Furthermore, calling it the 'East Sea' is geocentrically biased towards Korea. It's not east of Japan, after all. We should also consider the Korea Strait. Should that be renamed, too? I never hear Koreans (or Japanese, for that much!) whinging about it. Not to mention the Korea Bay.
In sum, that's why the issue annoys the hell out of me. |

This is exactly what I expect from the majority of posters here. |
