| A blog sounds like a wonderful idea. But is it possible to keep it private and not having get found in search engines? |
Interesting question- not really sure what the answer is or how much you know about web stuff.
For a blog you can use tools on the internet which make the whole thing very easy (e.g. look at http://blogspot.com/about.pyra), but the company who are hosting your blog would almost certainly put you in a searchable directory with all the others they host. Without any kind of promotion (getting other people to link to your site, putting your website address at the bottom of your posts on Dave's ESL etc. ) it's unlikely anyone would stumble across your site, but that's obviously not the same as it being private.
It looks like if you create your own website, using http://geocities.yahoo.com/ you don't have to list it in their directory, so unless someone guesses the address you should be OK.
If you want the privacy of an email, this might not be the way to go though. |

| I believe Yahoo has a way to post pictures online which can be accessed with a password. |

| Seriously, I'm waiting for friends and relatives to visit me. Several have said during telephone conversations and in letters that they would, and at least three still say they will, but my doubts are growing as I'm half way through my second year and "up-ta". |

I think you can do this on www.ofoto.com too.
I hear you Van Islander- my brother and his girlfriend came out to see me a few weeks ago and it was fantastic to show someone from back home what the hell I've been talking about all this time. Pictures, emails, phone calls, are all just shadows that miss out the smells, tastes, sounds and experiences of actually being somewhere. |

Try using MSN messenger - and have a microphone and speakers on your computer....
It will save you money on needless telephone calls - as basically whoever you wish to chat to - just has to be online at the same time as you... It is basicall the same as a telephone call (but free) and also send pics etc at the same time....
For sending bulk pics (fast) try this program - "Picasa 1.618" - you get .....
"Designed for home users, this software replaces what came with your camera. Picasa detects your USB camera driver to import digital pictures and automatically begins to organize them into visual albums by date instead of in files and folders. Putting all pictures in one application allows you to find and view any picture on your PC without wasting time searching your computer files or hardware devices. Picasa works with JPEG, GIF, BMP, PSD, and movie files. Editing includes crop, fix red-eye, enhance - even switch from color to black and white. The new Hello feature gives you instant sharing plus instant messaging all-in-one: now send one picture or a dozen in seconds. You can also send pictures through your own e-mail application or using Picasa's built-in client |

| Not sure if msn still offers it but they had groups where you could post photos and messages. There are differing levels of privacy, one being where you need to give them permission to join... prob. most appropriate in your situation. |

I use a program called Skype. www.skype.com
All you need is a microphone and speakers and you can talk to anyone for free. It's easy and the quality is actually really good. It's a lot better than using a pay phone with calling card on. Of course the other person needs the internet, headset or mic. I've saved a lot of money using it over calling cards. You have up to 5 people talking at one time too. |

I never really used to see most of my relatives in England anyway, plus they probably think I am still there as they don't really take an interest in the 'family grapevine'.
Email through yahoo. That keeps me in touch with the people I need to stay in touch with and phone for the immeadiate family and friends. |

| I use Yahoo, but Yahoo has been unreliable. Sometimes messages don't get through. And all those viruses that I get in my bulk mail! The suggestions on here have been invaluable. Thanks! If you have more, keep 'em coming. |
