I have a fridge that makes a bunch of noise when it starts the cooling process. Really loud, sharp knocking sounds-- Pock POCK POCK POCK, almost like someone is hitting the inside with a big plastic stick or something. I used to think it was coming from the freezer specifically but now I can't tell. The problem here is that the apt is designed so that there's only one place for the fridge to go, and that's right next to my bed, so when the fridge turns on, I wake up, and if I'm being awakened multiple times per night, that basically means no sleep at all for me. So I've been turning the thing off at night, which is probably not too healthy a practice and makes my food go bad real fast.
Does anyone have an idea of what the problem might be and how it might be fixed? Maybe it's some really common problem that I can fix myself. Incidentally, this is a Daewoo fridge (didn't they go out of business years ago? Maybe that's part of the problem here, I have a 15-year-old fridge?).
The management in my building is pretty accommodating, but I'm reluctant to tell them about the problem because they probably won't send a fix-it person; instead, they'll just replace the fridge with a different machine that won't necessarily be better (this happened a few months ago). |

The compressor is dying. You need a repair man or a new fridge.

My fridge died, and when they did something about it, they just gave me a mini-fridge in its place T.T But, it would've been better to at least get that done first, rather than having to clean up a kitchen of water and tons of hot kimchi T.T
If your house is part of your contract, tell your boss and see if they'll fix it. They always want the cheapest option, so they might be able to fix it for you instead of replacing it with something worse. Good luck!! |

It your fridge really old? It sounds like the same trouble I had with my brand new Daewoo fridge. The sharp popping is the plastic expanding/ contracting and the repair guy from Daewoo told me it was normal, in fact It was written on the sticker (in Korean so I missed it).
The good news: it dies down over time. These days mine still give off an odd thunk but nothing like before. |
