Can anyone confirm or deny that America's cant just do the drivers licence exchange any more?
If not, what is the process like to get a drivers licence here? Do I need to take a Korean with me? I'm living in Nowon, what is the best place to go to take the test?
Thanks! |

So according to that list, Canadians don't need to take the written test?
Just the physical? |

Couldn't Canadians just get an International Driving Permit? It costs 25$ and is valid for one year, renewable each time. |

I need to renew mine this summer, after 9 years. Hopefully they will just make the renewal painless and I won't have to turn in any other documentation. I've had a clean record for 9 years, and got the thing long before any license exchange was necessary. |

No. If you are resident long-term (as in here on anything other than a tourist visa), then you must have a Korean driver's license to legally operate a motor vehicle in Korea. |

correct... and the physical is a simple matter of an eye test and some squats done at the test center.

Easiest way for Canadians and Americans is to hit up the Embasy and then pop over to the Seoul Global Center not even a 5 min. walk away. There is a photo booth in Gwanghamun (?) station and the nice people at the Center can direct you to the Eye doctor, they even called ahead for me so everyone knew what was going on. Avoid the lunch hour and the whole process can take as little as an hour.
Here's their page on exchanging your licence

This is the only way to link directly to it.
It's easy enough, go to the living menu, then driving
What needs a translated and notarized copy? The license or the certificate?
The official site doesn't say anything about a translated and notarized copy of anything at all.
in fact on their comment about the embassy cert:
"The confirmation issued by embassy need not to be notarized. "
All they say you need is license, passport, cert and 3 photographs. |

Also, Idaho. My boyfriend was rather happy about that fact when we went to get our licenses a couple of weeks ago. |

A translated and notarized copy isn't necessary. As an American, all you need to do is take your US Driver's license to the US Embassy and fill out a short form and have them notarize it. The process costs 50,000 won and takes about 15 min if you have an appointment. |
