The 2 years post cert expectation probably is propagated by reading sites like this one:

Can teachers holding masters (not in ed, but in a school subject like history) plus TEFL cert also find work in international schools? I heard no before but I have some indications now that the answer is sometimes yes as well.

I don't know about that but I can tell you first hand that the bilingual schools I hire teachers for do not hire teachers without a teachers license and 2+ years in the classroom. TEFL not needed. Education degrees not required but home country certification is. Masters preferred but not required.

Can you, with a masters, find work in an international school without home country certification and post certification experience = yes but it won't likely be at a school paying US$100k per year and is unlikely to happen from your keyboard. Hit up a few of the job fairs (there is a big one in BKK every year) and see what you get.

The other option is to get off of the ESL boards and look to the international schools websites and organizations:

There are actually quite a few int'l schools where the top of the salary scale is within the 100000 USD a year region. When you factor in bonus (15% for many), housing, pension contributions (present at the best schools), flights, and relocation allowance the total compensation package is well in excess of that figure. And you don't have to take my word for it just look at the ESF package in Hong Kong.

The level of misinformation on this site never ceases to amaze me. My other personal favorite is this misconceived notion that you have to have two years back home teaching experience post certification to secure an international school position. The best step you can make for your career is to research it yourself rather than rely on people who have no real vetted interest in your future.

To be certified, at least in some states in the U.S., requires two years of teaching experience. I understand that's not "post-certification," but maybe that's what someone had in mind. Maybe.

When I worked in Singapore I met international school teachers there making US$6-7000 a month, and I think accommodation was included. They were registered teachers in their home country and had worked at several other international schools to get to that point. If you want to break into that, you could do something like the U.K. PGCE online, or go home and do a Education degree and get registered teacher status, and then go work in some lesser paid international schools to get some experience.

Many thanks for that, Fat Elvis, and thanks all.

Yes I have no illusions about taking down a $96K contract, but I thought that asking would clarify the trajectory of next-cert-goals to get off this rock and toward at least the upper eschelon jobs, and it has. Very helpful thread this has been.

Name ONE international (k-12) school where the remuneration package for a k-12 teacher is over US$60k never mind US$100k.

Here are 10 to start with. Most schools don't publish their salary scales on their school websites, so it takes some effort and/or a recruiter to get the package details:

American School of Japan
International School of Bangkok
International School of Beijing
Western Academy of Beijing
Singapore American School
Shanghai American School
American School of Dubai
The Graded School in Sao Paulo
Jakarta International School
KAUST schools, Saudi Arabia

Many schools in Western Europe pay over $60k, but the taxes are very high (40-55%) and they often don't include housing.

U.S. Department of Defense Schools pay over 60k but under 100k.

If you include housing, shipping, flights, PD funding, there are dozens of schools that pay $60k or more. Most international teachers I know with a Masters and 8+ years experience are making at least that. Even in Korea, SFS, Chadwick, KIS, and SIS get pretty close to 60k if you include housing and other benefits, and have a Master's and 8 years+ experience.
