Does anyone know how long it will take to get the certificate of completion for the course? I'd like to apply for the F-2-7 as soon as possible.
Edit: I just saw that there's a page you can print with your score on the "My Page" of socinet.go.kr. Do you think that's good enough to take to immigration? I have some co-workers who are going on Tuesday and I'd like to hitch a ride with them if possible.
For anyone who's gotten the visa - has it affected your insurance, pension, etc. at all? Recently our school has been asked by the MOE to get copies of our apostilled degrees and CBCs again; I was just going to have immigration issue me a copy and send it to the MOE. You don't think they'll ask again once I change my visa, do you?
Congratulations everyone who passed, and good luck to those of you who are still working on the course! |

I just applied today and gave them the printout of the KIIP cert, Immi said it was fine. |

| Immigration told me I won't hear anything more about the visa for another month or two. I heard a rumor that Immigration only grants this visa to one in three applicants, even if they have all the points. That seems a bit odd to me, but I don't know anyone else who's applied and been accepted or rejected. Anyone know if there's any truth to this? |

That seems a little odd. Where did you hear that they're denying people who have all the points? And I wonder what reason do they give for denial? My application was approved right on the spot. The only thing I had to wait for was the printing of the new ARC (around 3 weeks). If it helps I know 4 others who have applied as well, all accepted, no problems. They were all last year though. Perhaps they're doing things a bit differently now? |

What immigration office are you using?
I was also told that, if there are no "problems" (what that could possibly mean, I have no clue), I should receive my ARC back on June 18 (I applied today). That's about a 3-week wait.
However, the immigration officer did seem confused about how the Social Integration Course points should be allotted (15 for language, 10 for the course), but luckily there's a Social Integration Course office on the 3rd floor of our immi building (Incheon) and she just called them and asked. They also wouldn't accept the 점수표 as proof of me finishing the course - I had to go back to socinet and print out a separate certificate for finishing the course.
I don't think there should be any problem as long as you have all the points legitimately. Probably they will run background checks on all of us to make sure that we haven't broken any laws, that our documents are legit, etc. I don't see why they should have a reason for denying 2/3 of applicants "just because". But then, who knows? Did they give you a receipt with your expected new ARC issue date on it? |

| It turns out I was worried for nothing. My F-2-7 was approved five days after I applied, the day before I called to check the status. I got a printed certificate and sticker in my passport today. The new ARC will take a few more weeks. That was by far the most exciting visit to Immigration I've ever had. |

Congrats!
This thread is really encouraging.
Anyhow, anyone signing up for the summer session? I'm finally going to get the process started this summer. |

I tried. It was pointless. I told them that I just wanted to be in level 0, but they kept insisting that I needed to take the placement test on July 28th. I won't be in Korea. So I have to wait until the spring |

| Yep, they don't make it quick. It took me almost a year from when I took the test to when I completed my 150 hours. I was hoping I could have somehow sped up the coursework so I could complete a big chunk of it during my summer vacation but every center only let you take 6 hours per week. Plus they take 3-month-long semester breaks between levels. |

To further complicate things, I need to do the course online. I just can't justify being away from the baby to get the visa, especially as a single mom. 6 hours per week and each one is 100 hours? so each one takes 17 weeks? I thought each one was only 10 weeks? |

| I sent you a PM, but yes, when I took KIIP it did take me about 5 months to complete level 4. You might not have to be away from your baby to take the course, though. I took it at two different centers, one of which (in Hwaseong) had day care facilities on site. Also, when I took the culture class, one of the students had a baby in the middle of the program. They were fine with her bringing her baby to class since she couldn't get a sitter, and the secretary helped take care of him. |

Thanks for that! I did the Korean course at the migrant centre in Suwon and they had daycare. I'll have to look into the options here. I guess I won't be able to start until next year. Maybe I could study in my free time though I don't really HAVE free time. In my "free time" I eat, sleep, and shower. Back to basics. I've been looking through the points and if I could get level 1 Korean on TOPIK and get 5 points for work experince, I wouldn't need KIIP. No idea what work expeirence is though.
For some reason I thought each level was 10 weeks. They're each half a year then? Lovely. Then it's not really worth doing KIIP since I could get the F2-99 by the time I finish KIIP. |

Well, that's odd. Did you question the information presented in FAQ 3 on their homepage?
http://www.socinet.go.kr/soci/main/main.jsp?MENU_TYPE=S_TOP_SY
Maybe I'm not understanding it correctly... but here is a loose translation of what I THINK it says:
"All participants in the SOCIAL INTEGRATION program must take the placement test and enter the level designated by the score you receive
on the test. However, anyone who has not received any education in Korean or who would like to learn Korean at a gradual pace from the very basics can be exempted from taking the placement test. In this case,
when you sign up for the SOCIAL INTEGRATION program and are asked (on the website) whether or not you want to take the placement test, you MUST check NO. You should note that once you have checked NO and applied for the program, you will NOT be allowed to take the placement test for a period of 6 months."
NOTE: Their site will not allow me to copy and paste any text, so I can't provide the Korean version here. But you can check the link I gave above
and find it yourself.
Naturegirl - I feel you should be able to enter the program without taking the placement test - so you wouldn't need to be in Korea. You would only have to apply online during the application window. If you've missed the application window because of incorrect information you were given (assuming the above is true) then you should appeal.
Good luck - and let us know what you find out. I hope the above will
help you. |
