| This might be a stupid question because I do realize we're talking about the most expensive city in the world here, but my girlfriend and I were about to book a hostel and realized the price advertised (45k KRW) which we thought was for the ROOM, turned out to be PER PERSON, so that tiny little private room at a hostel ends up being 90k per night, which seems ridiculous. Is this really our cheapest option? There's no love motels or anything of that nature? |

| Try airbnb.com and couchsurfing.org. You might spend about the same amount with Airbnb, but you'll probably get something better. Couchsurfing is free if you can find someone willing to host you. |

yeah, that is ridiculous for a hostel.
You could definitely get a double room at Toyoko Inn for around the same price. That will include breakfast and free internet.
Just go to http://www.toyoko-inn.com/eng/index.html and make your reservation. There are over a couple of dozen Toyoko Inns in Tokyo itself, with many more in the surrounding areas. Ones in prime locations like Shinjuku tend to be a little more expensive so you just need to go through the list and see which ones are cheapest. They're always near public transport though, so even out of town you wouldn't be too inconvenienced.
Their prices are per room, btw, not per person.
There ARE love hotels, but they don't quite work like they do in Korea and in the Tokyo area they wouldn't be any cheaper than the above option. |

Wow, there are TONS of places in Tokyo...is there any way to sort it out by price to make this easier on me? |

| I clicked on three random Tokyo Toyoko hotels and got 5980, 5980 and 6980 yen per night for a basic room. Not so bad if you're going with a partner, but I'm not. Looks like a hostel dormitory for me |

I didn't try couchsurfing because I can't see why anybody would want me and my gf staying at their place w/o paying for anything, but we booked a place I found on airbnb for $45/night. Thanks! |

My pleasure, I hope it works out. I've had great luck with that site.
You might be surprised by Couchsurfing, as a lot of people just like having visitors. That said, while I would totally use it if I were traveling with a buddy, I would probably want more privacy if I was traveling with my girlfriend. |

Maybe try a sidewalk. I hear they're practically free. |

Yes, the love hotels are not cheap (unless you stay "short time"), esp. in Shinjuku it would certainly be more expensive than 90k KRW...
For cheap rooms in Tokyo, head to the Kita-senju area (north of Ueno). It doesn't get any cheaper. Not much for English speaking though (mostly locals stay there, businessmen etc.) but there's quite a few. There's one street in particular with like a dozen cheap hotels in a row.
Toyoko Inn is actually a tad pricey for a single person (I usually just travel to Tokyo alone for work) so I wouldn't bother with it, but might be a decent option for couples... If you're staying for more than a week, a weekly mansion might be another idea. |

For a single person, yes I'd agree, in the Tokyo area you can certainly find cheaper, especially if you're reasonably familiar with Japan.
But for a couple, even at the slightly more expensive rates they charge for premium Tokyo locations, it's a pretty good deal as they charge per room, not per person as many hotels, and as the OP found out even hostels, do in Japan.
Another big advantage of Toyoko Inn is that it's one of the more hassle free options, both to book in the first place and to stay in, for those not familiar with Japan. |

Yep, that definitely is a reasonable assessment. And really, if you divide by two, the price becomes pretty reasonable (and as you mention saves the hassle of having to find some out of the way hostel).
The same goes for weekly mansions (which become cheaper if you rent them out monthly, but even weekly are reasonable). They usually have shoe-box size rooms for singles (like 12 sq meters), but for couples on a budget even this could work (might have to enter separately though lol). Otherwise an upgrade to a double room would still be fairly cheap compared to many hotels. |

| Capsules are another option but they're pretty expensive too and you're not getting your own room. Maybe $35 a person. |
