If a Korean male used some white females or black females and we made a documentary about it in North America, we would look so horrible, wouldn't we? Yet, this happens in Korea in 2012. It's like the Deep South many decades ago where people were warning white women about dating black males or Chinese males. Of course, it's no problem if Korean males marry Western women because they're men and men can be in charge, and the white women in some cases are seen as high status brides. They made no mention of Korean males with Western females. And it's not like there are no Korean women who don't use foreign men for sex or for other things. I've known foreigners who have been used by Korean women. The majority of Korean women are fine, the majority of Western men are fine.
This report isn't. It's wrong on so many levels. |
Good points. When it comes to love let people decide for themselves. |

I think that it might have been a bad translations and that the guy actually said that the 3 million was key money.
But who knows if it actually even happened. |
You mean a fabrication by such a fine TV network as MBC? Shocking? |

These are good ideas in theory. The fact is that no matter what people choose to do to protest it will have little effect most likely. There will be no apology I'm sure, and media outlets will continue to produce crap like this from time to time. |
That seems fairly certain. |

Your point is well made...now if you feel strongly about it, do something!
You have lots of options my friend. You can write to the station, encourage Korean friends to write to the station or to the government, start a petition about the report, write an op ed piece for one of the papers and try to have it published (its not that hard), contact another network and ask them if they would like to produce a counter-piece by discussing the issue in a more balanced matter.
Heck we live in Canada, saw the report (online) and we wrote to MBC (wife and I). We know lots of people in her family and amoing our K-friends wrote or called the station too.
Debating this HERE will however do nothing and change nothing! |

Ehh, might help some to think about their position, hell, change it if they are open minded enough to consider opposing ideas. It does something. It has value. Think of it as practice. |

This at least is true.
Most Korean women are significantly more conservative than westerners.
Yes, the type of women you meet in Itaewon might be up for one nights stands but they are not typical.
The whole "go out and get laid" culture that exists in the west is different here. In Korea that role is generally filled by prostitution, not average young women. Their tendency is toward solid relationships.
It is not surprising that there is a huge amount of confusion and disillusionment happening out there. Koreans expect foreigners to be the same as them and foreigners expect koreans to understand the way they think. Unrealistic. |

I'm guessing you don't know a lot of young Korean guys if you think one night stands are only confined to Itaewon. |

Julius, mate, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Do you know any Korean women? They are not as pure silky white as you make out my friend. Sorry to burst your perfect bubble of chastity but just working in a uni I can tell you you are wrong wrong. And that is only young women. The vid is talking about independent women in their 20's and 30's. |

I didn't say they were silky white, my very dear friend.
I said they were generally more conservative than westerners, and that the associated culture is different.
Do I know Korean women? lol. I used to be married to one U teat. During the past ten years I've been in this country. Western women and K-women are far from identical.
I think you need a bit more than your voyeuristic ogling of the students in your care before we let you have an opinion, sonny. |

The professor explaining about why Korean women go after foreign men is from a school (hmm...church) called 나사렛대학...how unbiased is that?
Check out the site for yourselves: (a cursory glance is all that's required)
The second picture on their homepage says it all.

...and just who is occupying the role of the prostitute?
There are a lot of them and perhaps some of them are average young women...no? |

MBCs standards and practices department told The Korea Herald that they had followed broadcasting laws but did not have compulsory guidelines on the reporting of race and nationality.
The lead writer for the show, made by external production company Pan Entertainment, said that she did not consider the content to be controversial, and claimed it was an accurate representation of the situation.
Our report is based on the facts that we found as we were covering the story and it strictly reported on the present situation. We have made it clear that it only reflected the few, she said, adding that she was concerned about the potential harm to the image of Korean women.
We have not revealed the races of the men we talked to and we tried our best not to reveal the areas that it was filmed. We only tried to show that there is a difference in culture and I hope that there is no more misunderstanding.
|
What facts? They are lying. Of course they showed the races of the men involved. What misunderstanding was there? |

This reminds me of race-nationalisim, particularly the common imperative to expose and sanction or otherwise route those seen as traitors to racial solidarity. It is present in strains of both white and black power movements and I perceive this story as a backhanded way of stigmatizing Korean women in mixed relationships. I especially feel the lead writers concern over the "potential harm to the image of Korean women" exposes that agenda.
While this story promotes misunderstanding and mistrust between ethnic groups I believe it's primary function is to attack and debase women whom ethnic nationalists would paint as traitors to racial purity -characterizing them as half witted, libidinous, immoral and diseased; it takes a lot of guts to walk around with your waygook boyfriend when you know people are saying that about you. |

Dude! What?! I guess the thousands of love motels that litter the country are where young adults go to...play cards? Try on clothes? Pray? This statement is absolutely ridiculous, and as someone who has been here a decade you should know better. Yeah, it's more hidden here, but women in Korea are just as sexually active as their Western counterparts. It took me 6 months at my first hogwan to figure out almost all of the females (about 20) in our school were sleeping with the male teachers and/or random guys they met. Married or not. They just don't go around talking about it. |
