When I first got here I arrived at night. First thing I said to my co-worker picking me up at the airport was:
"Where are the stars?"
It's a shame that even in a metro suburb I hardly ever see them. |

One thing the Korean people back home would always mention about the states was the stars. Now I lived in a fairly light-polluted area, when it was church retreat time in the middle of nowhere and the full sky was visible, that was a real stunner. I do miss a full night sky.
You have to wonder what not being able to see the full night sky has done to mankind. Something that spectacular has to have some sort of effect on the human psyche. |

And when the sky is that milky white from pollution and humidity the quality of light is very different. Sometimes it is if the city is is bathed in a glow near noon, rather than in beams of sun.
It's summer in Seoul. |

| I noticed that when I used to take a bus into Seoul on a clear day, the city sky always white and hazy. It's smoke and probably some humidity from some sort of industrial cooling systems. |

I've been here for years, but I'm still not sure about this...
Why is the sky almost always white here in the summer? Even when the weather websites all say it's "sunny", the sky is usually white.
Is it pollution? Are major cities in the USA and other countries like this in the summer?
I just think the lack of blue sky is gets depressing as the summer goes on. |
The sky is blue (in many places) because blue is an easily refracted color in water droplets (from humidity etc). White occurs when multiple visible wavelengths are refracted. It seems that material in the sky (dust, etc.) is refracting multiple visible wavelengths instead of mostly blue. I am not an expert in pollution so I cannot suggest a cause. |
