|
|
When I don't wear glasses I usually get comments like "you look very strange" or "You look very ugly". I think the children's attention is focused on my glasses when I do wear glasses but their attention is focused on how non-Korean I look when I don't wear glasses. My glasses broke so I have been wearing contact lenses lately. |

It's probably the flaming skull that's doing it. With the glasses off, it's more noticeable? |

Kids are kids~ any small change will interest them... Some of my students even recognize when I get my bangs trimmed @.@ If I wear a headband to school, it causes quite a scene, as well, LOL~ It's just about change~ |

I have 6 pairs of glasses, and also wear contacts. I may go a few weeks wearing just one pair, then switch them up and they all comment, even though they've seen them before. When I wear contacts, they usually say that my eyes look big and pretty, like a deer's.
Accessories are important. I wore emerald earrings for months on end, then wore pearls for a change on Tuesday and all my students commented on how pretty they were. They were likely sucking up, but they noticed.
Maybe try under-eye cream. |

I couldn't imagine saying that to a teacher when I was a kid, both in the US and Korea. In Korea I would've gotten tossed across the room. |

That's interesting. I thought it must be a cultural thing- that Koreans must be less sensitive about their appearance than westerners. I often read journal entries of Korean children like, "On Sunday I go to the downtown with my friend Minho. He is very fat and ugly but I like him." |

lol no. If anything they're more sensitive than Americans I found, which is why Korean guys spend 5 minutes playing with their hair instead of washing their hands in the bathroom and Americans in general seem to dress more like slobs. Koreans just don't have as much tact.
But they only say that kind of stuff to people they feel are equal to or below them on the social hierarchy, or at least have a close relationship (like dudes making fun of eachother). Can't speak for kids these days but I couldn't fathom Korean kids saying that to a Korean teacher when I was a kid. We got literally smacked in the face or much less. I have seen kids make fun of foreign teachers in Korean because they know the teachers can't understand them. I also been made fun of when I taught and was supposed to pretend I didn't speak Korean. I stopped handing out candy to those little brats afterwards. |

I effing love that movie.
Still, the kids do notice things that shouldn't be that big a deal. |

I too wear multiple pairs of glasses that I interchange and even though they've seen the glasses, but if I wear two or three different pairs in a week then they always comment even though they've seen them all.
I also get questions as to why I have so many pairs. (Me being excessively clumsy doesn't help and they usually laugh.)
The other thing that gets me students talking is whenever I take them to the bus after class and I wear my aviators. |
