I was not renewed by my office of education and by my public school.Apparently my open class score was low.This however is not the true reason I am not being renewed.My co-teachers have signed reference letters that I typed out.To cut a long story short,I got screwed over.My main problem is that when another provincial office of education calls my reference's,they will ask if I was renewed or not.When they find out that I was not renewed I'm guessing that I can kiss the job goodbye.Is there anyway around this besides going the Hagwon route?

What is the "true reason" you weren't renewed. Obviously this untold reason could influence or determine whether you will have a chance at another public school or not. |

| Does it really matter if you are renewed? I have never seen that as an issue for recruiters or schools. The main thing is if you worked a full year. Since you said you have recommendation letters, I would move on and find another school. |

| I replaced a runner.I too could not absorb the verbal abuse of one of my co-teachers.I spoke directly with my office of education,they couldn't hep.I was forced to give the school an ultimatum.I said I would leave if I had to continue teaching with this teacher.I'm guessing they didn't like to be compromised.They granted my request but screwed me over in the end.This is just one reason. |

I wish future employers did not check references,but they always do.I could make up a number of reasons for leaving my current job and location.However,the question will arise as to whether or not I have been renewed,and why.I doubt my current co-teachers are not going to favor me over the school. |

In a Confucian society, this alone pretty much assures your only future (short term) would be in a hagwan.
One thing to remember is that you are nothing more than a commodity (easily replaceable) and work place rules are NOT the same as back in the States.

I know firsthand about a situation where a pair of sour, middle-aged K-teachers are driving away their NET. Rudeness & laziness. So one new teacher is rather upset and has stated he can't handle this much more, and the other has just left and found another job. Upper management's solution: go find more teachers even if they have to pay recruiting fees again and again.
These women are untouchable in their eyes. They've been teaching for 25 years and they will NEVER be fired. "Please understand" is the motto.
Now we go find another teacher and can't be 100% honest (otherwise he won't take the job) but we do dance around the topic of adaptability and flexibility.
By going to the board of Education, you wrote down your end date. This would be 100% why you aren't being renewed. And you may have been 100% justified too.
Like it or not, Korea has its way of running things. |

Never ever forget this. As such, it is VITAL to have good relationships here, even if your coworkers are sour, lazy etc...
This alone should be course number 1 for any CELTA or MA that deals with teaching in Korea.

You have to realize that as an NET, you're essentially being hired solely for being born in the US (or Canada or UK). App. 300 million people are qualified enough to take your job. I'd say that NETs have the job security similar to that of a summer lifeguard. |

If there were a thread I wish newbies would read regarding the choice of going the "safe" public vs. the "risky" hagwon route it would be a thread like this.
Regardless of how hard you work or how sincere you are, you're in a game that you're always somewhat disadvantaged in.
I just heard from another NET-teacher that she'd seen info regarding the percentage of NET's re-signing for this Fall. It was supposedly only 41%.
I imagine this doesn't include the number who didn't make it to even be considered for re-signing?
Another friend of mine works in a public school district and at the last training they had a handout that was about "creating peace" between the NET's & K co-teacher in the class room. It does give some indication about the tension and conflict that can come in the public school positions.

Screwed? What did you expect? Anyway, I agree with YTMND. You got your letters of rec., completed a year (right?)...just move on.
Though, still...I'm curious who forced you to give the school an ultimatum?  |
