A new E-mart opened near my place. I get everything I need from my Home Plus Express, but quality alcohol is an issue.

Does E-mart carry any decent alcoholic beverages? If so, which are recommended?

Alcoholic beverages is pretty broad. Do you want beer, wine, liquor, all of the above?

E-mart has about as good a wine selection as you can hope to find in SK. I've found decent deals on Spanish and South African wines there in particular. There are some quality Western liquors there too, such as Finlandia vodka, Jack Daniels and Bombay Sapphire. I'm not above picking up some of the cheap Korean-made liquor knockoffs for cocktails and cooking. I particularly recommend Captain Q, Korea's finest domestically produced dark rum.

They carry a growing selection of imported beers, too, and I've even seen a few brands of hard cider.

Happy, happy, happy E-mart-euh!

With you there. Although I heard E mart is owned by Wallmart, which put me off a bit.

Whoever told you that is an idiot. It's owned by Shinsegae:

Quote:
Shinsegae was originally part of Samsung Group, separated in the 1990s from the Samsung Group along with CJ Group (Food/Chemicals/Entertainment), Saehan Group (Electronic Media/Apparel/Textiles), and the Hansol Group (Paper/Telecom). It owns the brands Shinsegae and E-Mart, and is in direct competition with Lotte Shopping and Hyundai Department Store Group. Currently it is the largest retailer in South Korea.[2]

This is why EMart and Shinsegae gift certificates are interchangeable.

The local Emart here stocks in abundance these unnamed beers in gaudy orange/red/black tall tins (500ml cans) that are actually quite good and cheap. As best I can tell, black cans are stout-like, orange are quite light lager-esque and red are somewhere in between. They have big, white numbers on the side.

They also usually have one or two different imported beer on special for around 1500 a can. Sometimes they're pretty good, other times they're garbage.

The usual array of hard liquor, all overpriced.

A surprising amount of wine.

Try the unnamed beers if they've got them. Steer clear of the overpriced hard liquor unless you really want it. Don't spend more than 15'000 on a bottle of wine unless you're into that or trying to impress someone. I like any kind of shiraz and Gato Negro Carmenere, both unique, strong tasting red wines.

i disagree bob. spend more than 15 000 on a bottle. go ahead and buy yourself a 30 000, nay 40 000 bottle of wine. and compare that with that 15 000 bottle.

at some point, you're gonna ask yourself this:

am i getting drunk

or

am i imbibing.
