Hi Guys,

I'm set to get an F4 visa after going to the Korean Consulate in LA this past week.

I'm a bit confused about the apostille part. These questions might seem messy so bear with me as I still don't grasp the whole process.

After I receive the CBC from the FBI and I send it to the State Department place, will I receive just one copy of an apostilled CBC? Do I make several copies of this orinal to show the recruiters or will I have to part with my original? If I'm in Korea and I finish a year of contract and decide to get another english job elsewhere, do I have to get a new cbc or do I show this one I got?

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, Just 1 copy.
2. You need to part with the original. Making copies defeats the purpose of the apostille. Though, in all honesty, the apostille isn't even truly needed. the FBI puts an indented stamp on those checks. It's good to have one if you want it though.
3. You need a new CBC because your old one "expires" in about 6 months.

Technically the CBC needs to be a maximum of 6 months old before the start date of your new job. so if you had a job and quit after 3 months and got another job you'd be ok, but if you apply somewhere a year later then you need a new CBC even though you've been in Korea the whole time.

To clarify:

On an F4 you do NOT need the CBC or degree with apostilles for your visa.

IF you want to work as a teacher then:

You do need the CBC with the apostille on the original.
You need a certified true copy of your degree with an apostille on it.

These are for the MOE (teaching job - ministry of education) and NOT immigration or for your visa.

When you are looking for jobs you DO NOT include your hard copies of your documents with your initial application. Include low resolution scans (<500kb .jpgs) with your resume and cover letter when you e-mail recruiters.

On an F4 (different from an E2) you save the hard copies for your employer AFTER you get to Korea (since they are NOT part of the visa confirmation process).

Okay, so hypothetically, if I went to Korea under English Job#1 and an F4, I would have to show them a cbc & degree apostilled. However, if I end up getting another English Job#2 midway, then I would have to show them a cbc & degree apostilled again? So does that mean I should have more than 1 copy of an original apostilled degree? And for cbc, since there is a expiration in place, I should do that in accordance to the timeline of finding the new job?

btw, I am picking up my f4 visa tomorrow.

i) Get your F4. Immigration doesn't care about your CBC or degree.
ii)Come to Korea
iii) Find a job

a) IF it is a teaching job then you will need to give your originals to the employer to register with the MOE/POE. The POE will KEEP the originals.

a-1) IF you change jobs within the SAME POE jurisdiction you are fine since your documents are on file.

a-2) If you change jurisdictions (move from Seoul to somewhere in Gyeonggi) then you may need another set (actually easier than trying to get copies back from the education office). The originals are gone (the POE won't give them back).

I think you're the one who stated before that you were a dual citizen so I'll try and give you one last bit of advice before you do whatever you are going to do.

If you are a citizen of a country, it is required by law (Both ROK and USA) that you enter the country under the passport of the country. Not doing so intentionally, especially to avoid military service, will lead to you being thrown into jail (though I've heard that they are lenient at times and will allow said person to enter the service in place of jail time).

Get a relative to call in and see whether or not your name is on your family's Hojuk. If not, then all the stuff I wrote above is moot. If it is, there is a chance that you could get conscripted even if you never try to pass yourself off as a Korean citizen (Holden Beck is an example from these forums).

Ultimately, it's all your choice. If you really truly don't want to serve in the military, ask yourself if the risk is worth it. Draft dodging in Korea is a crime and typically draft dodgers have had to serve a jail sentence equal to the length they would've been in the military. Is working at a Hagwon worth it and if it came down to it, would you serve in the ROK military?
