I've just been informed that I need to have another medical check within the next week.

I've been in Korea for about 21 months. My second year I started at a new school in a new city (both Hagwons). I have the national insurance. At the end of my current contract, in August, I'm planning to return to the states permanently.

I asked why I need another one and the only response was that i 'need one for {current school}.'

I don't get it? Is this standard practice? I don't think I have any medical problems, but I almost suspect they are trying to find a way to send me home early so they don't have to pay me severence or air fare..I wouldn't put it past them. Or am I being paranoid?

It is likely MOE asking for it. It may not be logical or fair but it comes up.
Well lets hope your school can give you the time for you to go do and bonus pay for it.

I still say expect to do one every year. Maybe sometimes you can renew or transfer without one.

Politely decline and/or delay this BS. If they came to your apartment and wanted to search it, would you let them? Why would you let them search your body? It is not a LEGAL requirement of your contract.

It happens. I had to have two medical checks during my last contract and they were talking about a third one before I pulled my midnight runner. And I was only there eight months.

Sometimes you need a new medical exam for Immigration when obtaining a new visa. Since you already have a visa, this is unlikely, unless Immigration suddenly discovered they had overlooked something previously.

Chances are that you need this medical check to meet the Education Office (DOE) new rules for all teachers. If so, it is a legal requirement and you must do this or you cannot be a legal teacher and your school will be legally forced to terminate you. It overrides any notice rules in your contract or from the dept of labor if you do not comply. Falure to follow Korean law obviates your protections.

If you have already met the Education office rules, the third possibility is that this is a health check required for your National Health Insurance (if you have it). If so, it's part of their preventative health screening program, so it's not a bad idea to get it. They seem to get to everyone on some kind of rotating schedule (once every two years?) based on the Korean alphabet. You might be able to delay this, but if you go past the deadline there is a sizable increase in your insurance rate.
