| I'm ABD and on my way to Korea right now with the first draft of my dissertation and 160 pounds of luggage, mostly books. That should be fine for the first year (working with the core books), but I may need another 60 pounds or more sent to me there depending on feedback from my committee. If things get out of hand I may be ordering from Amazon or wandering around looking for a good library. I'm looking forward to a tiny apartment with no TV, phone, or internet. If I don't learn Korean I'll be hard to distract. |
So many people stop forever at ABD that you see this after their name as a title. I guess it is becasue of the huge amount of work to get to that point. In my case, when I was ABD, I said it meant all but done. So, I done it. I am Dr. Chicken. Or is it Chicken, PhD |
I think it's Kwangjuchicken, PhD. Congratulations!
What country is your university in? Did you do any of your research or writing in Korea?
Best,

SSCI: Social Sciences Citation Index
SCI: Sciences Citation Index
For most hiring and promotion processes, only articles published in journals ranked in one of these count. |

ABD should never be used as a title. It is an effort to get to that point, though. Depending on the dicipline, you have to get through the diagnostics, the prelims, write the dissertation proposal, and defend it.
This puts you at the point where you just need to finish that little 200 page highly structured book, defend your work, and then publish it under the scrutiny of the best people in the world in your chosen field. No pressure.
People get through it. The big thing is to have a topic and to get started on your dissertation background theory and lit reviews as soon as possible. A lot of people stop at the ABD phase because after 2 or 3 years of work, they find themselves starting all over again at the dissertation proposal, and then they're looking at another 3 years to hopefully finish up. That's a bummer. |

| I did the first class of an online Education EdD about 5 years ago. It about drove me crazy! I finished the class OK, but looking at 10 more classes and several for the dissertation, I decided to hell with it! Not worth the money and heartburn. |
Where did you do that? The EdD looked kind of attractive to me too.
What do you guys pay in Korea?
The main thing putting me off now is the $60K price tag I've seen elsewhere. |

| Everyone I know has gotten fully funded, including tuition and a stipend (for TA/RAing). Funding is one of the first things you should look at in a program, especially a good program. |

I am considering an EdD also. Any thoughts on the differences between the E and the P? |

My understanding was the PhD was more academic, with the EdD had hands on type work. |

| From what I read, the EdD is catered more to people working in a related field, while the PhD is more of a full-time school commitment. The PhD is supposedly the better regarded of the two. |

Bump!!
I am thinking of doing a PhD in a few years in Korea, so if anyone has anything to share about their experiences of researching in said country, so much the better.
I would be interested in doing a Doctorate in a field related to education and language acquisition. |

| I wouldn't mind investing 3 years of study on a PhD, but I would have to be working at the same time to afford it. I wonder where though? |
