I was sacked by my job on Thursday after the holiday. And just three days before pay day. the director wanted me to get out of my apartment that day. He then refused to pay me the full amount I was owed. They had organised some elaborate 'drama' saying things like why you make me angry. This was both the director and his wife. The director shouted at me, saying he wouldn't pay me until 4 weeks even though I he had fired me. I told him my pay day was the 10th, which it was. He started shouting at me. I went outside to call a friend and he started shouting at me in the street calling me names.

They called me and told me to go back later that day and he took me into one of the classrooms with his wife, whereby he still refused to pay me, he started insulting me again, and then when I went to leave he slammed the door closed and stood in my way so i couldn't leave. He then left so i was left with his wife, who I spoke to for two minutes then left. I went outside and he texted me later to tell me he had paid me and that he would pay the deposit back when I left.

That's a step in the right direction. Now when you are ready to leave, just stay in his office until he gives the deposit. Otherwise, do you really think you will see it?

I am moving out today and my school just asked for money for a water bill. I agreed to not get paid this month and I gave up some overtime and airfare money to end things early. That shut them up.

You got to be firm when leaving, they always like to take a bite out of what you are owed and is rightfully yours. I spent all night cleaning the apartment because overall, they treated me nicely. However, when the water people came with a bill dated from 2010 (I have only been here 1 year), that's when I refused to pay for at least half of it.

It wasn't even mentioned in the contract I would pay it either.

I agree with the name & shame policy.

However it can be legally tricky if you do so.

So why not write the name in code, or give good hints that only a native speaker would guess. That way you'll help other prospective teachers avoid it, you'll make it harder for the school to find a teacher (revenge!), and will increase your protection from legal reprisals. I'm not legal expert, im just guessing here.

So far this hagwon is not really doing anything wrong. They tried to get out of paying. This is typical for any school. In fact the lazy schools are the ones who overlook it.

This teacher stood their ground and called their bluff. Now they are paying. We need to see how the deposit works out.

Are you leaving Korea or staying? How long were you working there? If it ws more than 6months, then you can go to the labor board and complain about not receiving 30 days notice. If they find that the employer fired you without justifiable cause and without due notice (if you've been there more than 6 months) then you can probably get a D10 visa at immigration. If you have a D10 it's no problem to get another job within a week if you're in a hurry. 2 weeks if you're being picky. If you're not looking for airfare or if you'll take a lower salary, you can even get jobs that will give you a contract for a few months. It's a lot easier and cheaper to hire a teacher who can transfer a visa than bringing one over, so most hogwons will be open to negotiate. If you're owed money, it's in your interested to stick around a few months at least.

What about pension? Did your employer pay into it? If so, you can collect that as well. If not, you can ask the pension office to look into it. They have a lot more power than the labor board. They don't like to be short changed any more than you or I, but being a government institution, they have the teeth to go after what's owed to them.
