Hello
My understanding is that hippos boxes are for closets, cabinets, and other closed spaces, but does anyone use them just sitting out in a room? Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks for any info. |

You're talking about the water eating hippos right? I don't know how effective it would be in an open space but I put them in my gym bag without the bag fully closed and it seems to collect moisture. |

I've seen ones that are for closets and such, but I've also seen larger ones that are for bathrooms... I don't think they would do much good in a living room or your bedroom unless you had a ton of them, though...
I thought they were more for bad smells than for moisture, too... But, I definitely could be wrong... |

There more for moisture hence the name, "Water Eating Hippos." But there are some products that also get rid of odor that you put them in near your shoes and stuff. |

Ive used two of the water eating hippos in my apartment this winter (the ones with the white pellets in the top right?) and they collected quite a bit of water.
My apartment has a really bad mold problem in winter and summer. I'm not sure how much the hippo things helped but they collected A LOT of water.
I know of 3 hippos:
The green one that goes in your refrigerator so it wont smell awful (like Korean refrigerators usually do).
The blue one that goes in your closet and is supposed to keep things dry and fresh smelling.
The white/clear one that collects water. (I'm guessing clear so you can see it is working).
There are probably more but these are the ones I know of. |

I've tried similar things in large rooms and they don't last long. If you have a problem with dampness then your only real option is a dehumidifier. If you want to go away for a few days, you can leave them to drain into a sink. Otherwise they shut off when their water bucket is full. |

I had really bad mold last summer due to humidity and I think that the "Water Eating Hippos" have helped a lot. I use them in my bedroom. But I do have several next to each other. I've had about three of them around there since February/March and they have all collected a lot of water. The one in my closet has not really collected any water at all. Hopefully they keep the mold away this summer.
I bought a big 10 pack for just a little under $10, so I think it can be a good option. |
