What is your current position and how does the salary compare to the average for a lecturer back home? I see adverts for uni jobs asking for applicants with a Phd which only pay 2.4mill a month. Why would a Phd graduate apply for a job like that. If I had a Phd I could be making the equivalent of 7mill a month back home. Are jobs really that difficult to find back home? Or are the real professor jobs not advertised around these parts?
My job pays 2.4mill a month and we had Phd applicants. What's going on out there?  |

As long as there is no shortage of people with PhD's looking for jobs as English instructors over here because their degrees are not very marketable (medieval studies, for example, is a niche market), don't expect the base salary to increase. Moreover, the government provides additional subsidies to universities for every MA and PhDs they employ, regardless of whether the degree is related to the subject taught...so don't expect to be properly remunerated if you have a degree in TESOL.

| Ph.D. in what? TESOL? That's not very marketable anywhere. And how many of those Ph.D.s were distance learning degrees? |

If it's a question of working here vs back home, then it may just come down to the lack of positions open back in the States. So even though the salary here is a lot less, at least it keeps someone in the university environment and buys them some time to apply for positions back home. And as someone else said, it may depend on what the PhD is in.
If it's a question of uni versus hogwon, then it's still better to work at a uni even if the salary is the same because you work fewer hours at a uni. |

There are jobs if you know where to look. After all, there are plenty of people who want to become English teachers around the world. Someone has to teach them. |

There are jobs if you know where to look. After all, there are plenty of people who want to become English teachers around the world. Someone has to teach them. |
There are some TESOL jobs, but not a lot of them pay all that much or offer much else. |

I am not a full PhD. I am only ABD but I do have other qualifications.
I no longer work as a lecturer - I do consulting to a couple of POEs.
I am now on an E7. I earn about 44m per anum for the consulting. (about 90-100 days of full time work per anum).
Additionally, I am an administrator of a school in Thailand. I earn an additional 50m won + benefits per anum for that job (8 months full time/year).
Would I take a position at 30m/anum to get into a country and get established = yes.
Would I stay there long term = NO. It is a simply a means to an end (networking to moving upward) unless you no longer have the drive or wherewithal to do anything about it.

In other words, you're doing what anyone who has worked his or her way to financial security has done, which is going in business for yourself and having something to fall back on if it doesn't work. Good on you. |
