In order to avoid paying too much for everything in Korea there are club cards, discount cards and membership cards for just about everything you buy. And of course each business has it's own card. Today I got a new wallet and removed all the cards in my old wallet. I was shocked to see that I have 42 plastic cards. How many cards do you have?

Good grief, makes me think of George Costanza's behemoth of a wallet.

Maybe a Korean version of this might help-

Ever since I found one of these cool slim Cole Haan business card cases, I only carry what I can fit in it. A useful way to cut back on wallet bloat. My thought is if your wallet is so thick it can be seen when you walk, you have too many cards. And guys should not be carrying those long wallets like what women carry in purses, IMO.

My case can hold 4 cards on the outside:

ARC
Korean bank card
American bank card
T-money card [I hate those fob things on keyrings]

Inside I can hold 2 more:

secondary Korean bank card
Illinois driver's license [got to remind myself!]

I don't carry my Costco card unless I'm going to Costco.

I don't understand [really!] why people use those ridiculous point cards. What do you get that makes them worth the bother of carrying them and remembering to use them?

I have no interest in having a Korean credit card [although I would take one of those Costco Amex ones, if I could ever figure out how to finalize the application].

I call on all of you of the bloated wallets! Join me and purge yourselves of the meaningless or unused plastic! Don't carry six different debit cards! Realize that 3 separate American cards is overkill in Korea! Know that you don't buy enough from Olleh [do you?] to merit carrying their card! Don't succumb to the dubious charms of the 'OKCashbag'! Realize that shopping at Family Mart or eating at Bennigan's does not require use of a matching card!

You'll be struck at how liberating it is. Really.

I'll Bite,

-stamp card wise, I dont carry any around however my wife does but only carries the ones were going to use that day. For example a coffee stamp card or a a restaurant stamp card. Why use the Card? A free Coffee or free Hors d'oeuvres once in a while is a nice treat for repeat costumers...

-Point cards are nice. Like homeplus or emart point cards. We get alot of money certificates every month for adding up points to those places. maybe around 15k won a month. Not bad! Olleh point card is good too. We Actually dont use the olleh card to collect points but rather spend points. Every year olleh gives out a shit load of points and then you can use them a various places. For example I use the olleh Card at tous les jours when i buy bread and I usually save about 1000 won off the price. Maybe save 5000 won a month just at tous les jours. Its little savings but when you add everything up It's somewhat worth it...

- Why dont you want a korean credit card? Using an american one or foreign one you have to pay extra for the exchange rate for anythign you buy abroad... Why not save a little and just pay with the korean credit card. No exchange Rate.... If your american credit card doesnt charge you any Exchange rate on your purchases then good for you . Still having a korean credit card you get all kinds of discounts at alot of places. 50% off amusement parks , Free movie tickets , % off chain restaurants ect...

If you dont care or want to bother about saving a bit of money here and there , I can respect that... But i think its pretty cool how competitive things are here with all the coupons/points/ benefits you get from certain cards. Now, I dont think you need to carry any more than 5-10 cards in a wallet though.

I only carry :

- Keb check card
- keb credit card
- ARC
- Canadian Mastercard

Everything else I leave at home unless I need it.

I hope people know that there are some iphone apps that keep all your point cards on file and also , you dont need to carry around an Olleh card. They provide a digital picture of a scanning code you can just put on your phone. thats what I use.

I have a long, slim wallet. I can't seem to find a photo of it online, but it's pretty slim, even with my cards and cash. My handbag isn't packed to capacity, so I hardly carry that much around. Wallet, phone, kindle, and a miniature version of my sun block are the essentials.

As for those point cards, when you're buying food for two, as well as a dog, they add up. My vet gives points, and I go there fairly regularly, so those add up as well. My last visit would have cost 70k, and was discounted by 10k because of points that I'd accumulated in just a month (I get more points if I pay in cash.)

I carry 3 separate American cards, because I'm keeping my good credit going. I use my MC for small things, my Discover for larger purchases because of the low rate, and my Amex for travel. It's nice to keep my spending categorized. I don't have any Korean credit cards, though--just my debit card.

It's literally liberating because you don't have companies tracking your every purchase.

I fail the invisible wallet test, though. Confused
