I'd go with Gangneung.

I know someone who worked in Suncheon at the uni for a year. He told me about it at length. Let me relay his main points.

1. He said in one full year, he only ever met one foreigner that dated a Korean. Koreans down there are a lot less likely and willing to fornicate.

2. The uni is full of maladjusted foreigners. Most of them had either work problems, hygeine, or mental problems. Like the OCD guy that was super messy at the same time.

3. South Jeolla people are highly Pro-NK. Be careful what you say.

It could be a good place to some people. Not for me.

He may have not met many foreigners that had, but there are quite a few guys and girls here that have dated Koreans. Looking at point number 2, there may another reason he didn't know many that did... but this really shouldn't be a main reason to choose a location.

There are some pretty cool people that work at the Uni. Just like any job, you're going to get a mix of personality types. People don't stay within their jobs here anyways, so you'll have a chance to meet a good number of people that work public or hagwon as well. There's rugby and soccer teams, there's a bunch of guys and a few girls that do MMA, and there's lots of different parties and activities going all the time. If you want to meet people, you just have to go to the pub here on a weekend, you'll meet a few people that will help you out socially.

3. South Jeolla people are highly Pro-NK. Be careful what you say.

They're not pro-NK, they're pro North Koreans. They want unification, they don't support the regime. Besides, that would be the one of the topics that you should really be bringing up unless you know the person you're talking to really well.

It could be a good place to some people. Not for me.

If you're a social person, you'll have a great time in Suncheon, as I'm sure you could have a great time anywhere here. This city has a really low turn-over rate among public teachers. If you choose to come here, you won't be making a bad choice is all I'm saying. But if you really want to go somewhere else, then you should do what's important to you.

What Space Ghoster said is quite true.
There are plenty of foreigners, and many of them
have Korean girl/boy friends.

I highly recommend Suncheon.

Why?
Some of the best Korean food in this country. There are many good cheap restaurants.
The people of Suncheon are quite friendly. I made friends with many teachers and students in Suncheon. Most of my best friends are from Suncheon (also Gwangyang and Yeosu).
If you like soccer the Jeonnam Dragons have a nice stadium and it costs 7,000 won to see a game.
There is now a very good Mexican Restaurant in Jorye-Dong.
As mentioned by others: there is Suncheon Bay, many nice mountains like Bonghwasan, Jogyesan, etc., the two temples (Seonamsa and Songgwangsa) and you are near many beautiful places like Boseong, Yeosu and Goheung.
And lest I forget: the Dong River is great for walking and riding a bicycle.
The university has great students and my co-workers there (2003-2008) were awesome.

During Chuseok I always return to Suncheon as it feels like my home away from home. Plus, some of my friends usually invite me to Chuseok Dinner. I could live in Suncheon forever Smile

What you said about Suncheon is awesome- it's great that you were able to really experience the place and people.

I am very interested in working at Suncheon National University this fall. Anybody who works there, has worked there, or has friends there, please send me a private message- I would really appreciate it! [email protected]

Thanks! Very Happy
