|
|
Returning to Korea soon. I will be getting a final paycheck from my current Canadian job and getting my income tax return put into my Canadian bank account, but these will go into my account about a week after I leave.
Can someone tell me if I can access funds from my Canadian bank account (RBC bank)? I don't want to use my debit card in stores to make purchases, but rather just make basic withdrawals to get me through my first month of teaching (before my first teaching pay day).
Can I use my RBC card at any ATM or do I have to go to a specific bank in person to make a withdrawal?
Any info appreciated! |

Yes, there are global ATMs everywhere. Usually at least one in every bank. Make sure to tell your Canadian bank that you will be traveling to/ living in Korea. |

I have never been able to use mine. I think the American system and countries that use it can access their cards here. I never had success with my RBC bank card. I have used cash advances on credit cards and made purchases here with no problem. Just make sure to tell your bank you're coming over here so that your card doesn't have any problems. Any global ATM will allow the cash advance if you need it. |

But as a side note, Americans use their debit and credit card together. One charges the other or something like that. Many countries do this system. But in Canada we use our debit and credit card seperately, so that may be why we run into problems. We use interact, though the plus network in the states recognize our debit cards. But this has only been for about the past decade or so.
Now if I could Nonghyup to actually give me a debit card that will work outside of Korea. #%%^&!! |

I feel your pain.
I spent time and hassle getting two kinds of Nonghyup ATM cards from two different kinds of NH branches. Both assured me that they would work overseas. They were very confident and sounded competent. I called up a central NH number to verify. Everyone assured me at least one of the cards would work.
It didn't work. Neither card worked. I tried tweaking the PIN format as explained by NH. The cards were completely useless overseas.
My advice to anyone is don't believe anything NH tells you about any of their ATM card types working abroad.
Eventually I will be heading to Korea Exchange Bank for a KEB ATM card as suggested by others. |

I use my canadian RBC card at least 4 or 5 times a week. I pay $1.00 per transaction. I imagine I am losing some in the automatic currency exchange but otherwise I don't notice. As mentioned, most banks have a global ATM, and almost all of the corner stores here support global transactions as well, but they are $2.00 charge..
I have done this on my checking account, and my savings account.
As mentioned, make sure to tell RBC you will be in Korea so they don't block your card as theft..
Also, I had my ATM cash limit increased to $2,000 and interact/debit payment increased to $3000 just in case there is an emergency.. |
