I was specifically told that the hat+shades thing makes me look american. Yeah, I know Koreans do the same thing..who knows. I hate it as much as the next guy, wish I had beams out of my eye like Cyclops and destroyed each and every head that starred at me for more than 5 seconds. But alas, I don't have that power.

You need to buy a massive hat that shades your whole body, or an umbrella, or never go outside in daylight. Plus you should only eat food where no-one can see you, by wearing a big, black cloak. You would probably feel more comfortable in Saudi, married to a mutaween. Have you considered praying five times a day and only letting your friends see your face when you're at home? It is really good for people who don't want to be looked at, and makes you less likely to kill them when they're unfortunate enough to be looking your way when your paranoid stare gets them in sight.

When I lived in Korea, I got used to it. I didn't mind being looked at one bit. It was funny sometimes. I would get some people walk up to me and it was a good chance to start a conversation and practice my Korean. I learnt a lot of Korean on the subway, talking to people who started staring at me. I would normally get my Korean learners book out and this was a good chance to show off!!!

Do people in Seoul still stare at Westerners? If they do, I haven't noticed. On the contrary, I often take note of how little attention my presence often generates. I think a lot of people believe that Koreans stare at them because that's what they were told and read before coming here. Preconceptions have a lot to do with shaping our interpretations of daily life.

I always wished the girls would give me more attention, but sadly I am not interesting enough to be glanced at. Maybe I need to work out more.

I do get little kids that like to point and stare, and have had many times been offered some of their snacks that they are eating. Babies also like to do that stare of "dude why are you so different looking" type look.

Awesome! I first arrived in seoul in 1999 and kids would point and shout at me in the streets of my neighborhood. Last time I lived in korea was 2008 and by then foreigners were nothing special. I think anyone staring now is looking at us and thinking what a cliche we are!

I've found that wearing sunglasses perturbs people from staring at all.

If you have a form of transport there is a lot less staring to deal with.

Generally it doesn't bother me. If someone is continually looking at me I might give an irritated glance, as if to say 'Why are you still looking at me?', but I haven't done that in ages

It all depends on who is doing the staring, if it's a satre or glare, and what exactly they're staring at on my body. Adjoshi's staring at my crotch or butt is definitely not cool. Plus, ANY staring in the men's room is out of line.

How do I deal with the staring? The same way I deal with other petty crap that has no effect on me and I couldn't care less about - I ignore it.

Nah, they stare. Human behavior and curiosity does not change. Try China. It's even funnier over here.
