Hi all,
Apparently there is a Gwangju by Seoul? I hope I get on the right bus for the one in southern Korea! |

Just like with so many other things, place names that are distinctive to native speakers can be confusing to non-native speakers.
In order to avoid confusion, you can always give the province and the city name--in this case, when buying your bus ticket you can simply specify that you want a bus for "Jeolla-Nam-Do, Gwangju". That should help. |

Incidentally, is the Guangzhou in China pronounced the same way as Gwangju?

I'm guessing that they would use different bus terminals! |

There are many towns and subway stations in Korea with similiar names. It can be confusing to many people. |

The Chinese characters are different. The one in Jeolla is 光州, or "light province," and the one in Gyeonggi is 廣州, or "broad province." The second one has the same meaning as the Guangzhou in China. |

The Gwangju in Jeollanam do is bigger and more of the center than the one is Gyeonggi do is. So, I always assume that someone means the bigger one in Jeollanam do when they say Gwangju, unless they specify the smaller one in Gyeonggi. This is the rule that we should all use on the board. I have never been to the one in Gyeongi, I just go straight to Seoul.
I haven't been to the one in Jeon-nam for over a year. But, I suggest the U square bus terminal and going to Geumnam no. If time allows, go over to the new area by city hall. They are along the one subway line there. The subway line can be reached by walking a km down from the E-Mart connected to the U square terminal. |

There was the one time I was supposed to go with another teacher for an event at Chungju National University in Chungju, and he didn't show. We called him, and it turned out he was at Chungbuk National University in Cheongju. So yeah, check beforehand. |

I meant in Korean. In this case I believe they're exactly the same

광주, 전라남도
^ Gwangju, Jeollanam-do. Copy it as it is and you'll have no problems.
I can't imagine you'll have a problem confusing the two when you first arrive, since the bus terminal for Gwangju (in this province) doesn't have buses going to the other one. You'll want to go to the Express Bus Terminal (it has a subway stop) and then go to the Central City bus terminal (there is another bus terminal over the road).
Alternatively if you fly from Seoul to Gwangju there'll be no confusion because the smaller Gwangju has no airport |
