When I first came to Korea (almost seven years ago), I really did believe my Korean co-workers when they said, "Korea is a [sexually] conservative country." Could they have been any more deceptive (and me any more gullible)? |

I think they mean that the girls don't easily give it up, and that they take that as a source of pride. Korean men in the old days would sleep with prostitutes while their women stayed virgins kind of like how in Peru it was acceptable for some men to go and sleep with prostitutes to become "men" because they couldn't sleep with the regular girls. Also, the girls were supposed to tone things down sexually.
Anyway, Korean spas have been busted in the U.S. for sex trafficking and prostitution. Would we use that to say there's a problem with the morality of Koreans in the U.S. like MBC did to the Westerners here? I don't get this whole thing about there's a problem with the morals of foreigners in Korea considering these brothels in the U.S., the trips to Thailand and the Philippines, the huge sex trafficking in this country and local prostitutes, but, yet, MBC acts like they don't exist. What a joke. |

What's not to get?
They are just taking the focus off themselves by blaming foreigners.
As long as they keep the "dirty wayguk" in the headlines, they don't have to
look at themselves.
It's the oldest trick in the book. |

What exactly is the problem described in the article? I wish they would do something about the quality of service and staff on Hooker Hill, that might reduce the number of "students" overseas.
All in all this article is just a disguised poke at the ruling party. |

Kinda what I was feeling. The article mentions human trafficking but no hard numbers. And the sex trade is an "embarrassing part?" According to whom? |

It's not like the other party was not guilty of the same things. They're just desperate to find a way to attack and embarrass the Conservative Party. I'm definitely in agreement that sex trafficking is a major problem in Korea. It is, but all parties have had people who turned a blind eye to this, more-or-less. This article is or column is posturing to help another political party.
I would like something to be done about human trafficking, of course. I completely sympathize with the women, especially if they're pressured into the skin trade. There are just so many women involved in the sex trade here and abroad. It's an interesting phenomenon that some emigrate to other countries and bring prostitution with them. I believe some of the Chinese immigrants do that, too. Anyway, in Texas, some Korean spas were closed down for being brothels or places for sex. That might be okay in Korea, but it's illegal in the U.S. |

As an American, I don't really feel like mouthing off about prostitution in other countries. It's not a big problem in Antartica (as far as I know). Anywhere else and there it is... |

It's not about prostitution per se. In the U.S., it's illegal, and they know it's illegal and still do it, and they know people will put you in jail for it there. Anyway, according to the view, there's human trafficking going on. That's something serious. I think some people don't like the fact that this embarrasses some Koreans abroad, too. It's not simply about the fate of these women. |

When I read the article I get the feeling is:
Prostitution is okay, we just don't want to be seen negatively. No one cares about the women involved, they just don't want to associated with them. If it were secret, there would be no problem.
In other words, they don't care about the women. They only care about themselves, and being associated in foreigners eyes with the women. This is the selfishness that bothers me about the country. There is no empathy. |

I remember Craigslist Vancouver was always full of "young Korean girl" ads. Girls gotta get their heel money, I guess. |

It's a natural part of human societies and has been since the begining of mankind. That doesn't mean it needs to be broadcast everywhere.

Oh geez! [facepalm] You guys just never quit with the "pushing our Western way on Asia" routine. Guess what, the girls want plastic surgery and purses and they work a second job in an Officetel to get what they want. You think they are some delicate angels? They are business women, supply/demand, basic economics. They can make the fast money this way and so they do it. Who are you to tell them what they should do with their life? |
