I currently work at a uni with an E-2 visa. My contract is up for renewal and I'm considering NOT resigning but may want to stay in Korea to do on-line Trinity dip ELT studies and possibly some on-line teaching. So, I want t leave the country at the end of my E2 visa in September and return on a tourist visa several weeks later.

If I do this, can I keep my apartment, phone services (internet and mobile), bank accounts, etc.? What about my pension? Can I access it when I leave in September? And can I work on-line for a company in Germany or Spain without issues here in Korea?

Further, can I repeat the process in December/January, ie., leave in December at the end of my tourist visa and return in January on another 3 mos tourist visa and keep my apt, bank accounts, phones, etc?

Living costs, high speed internet access and relocation are such that it makes more sense to stay in Korea while I work on my Masters, but I want to be 'legal' at the same time!

Thanks for your help.

When your job is up switch to a D10 visa.

It will allow you up to 6 months to "look for work".

At the end of that time you will need to either leave Korea or change back to a work sponsored (E2) visa. It will save you the hassle of getting new documents when you are ready to go back to work.

Thanks. Didn't know about a D10. A couple of follow up questions, please.

1. Apply for the D10 when my job ends or when my visa ends? Or does it matter.

2. If I apply for a D10, can I leave Korea in September? (I was actually thinking of vacation in Nepal) Or, do I have to stay in Korea?

Thanks again!

To apply for a D10 (without complicating paperwork) you need to be at the end of your contract (last 7 days) and still have time remaining on your ARC. The visa in your passport is not relevant.

It takes a couple of weeks to get your new ARC. You CANNOT leave Korea if you are not in possession of a valid ARC. AFTER you get your ARC you should be able to leave and return.

Again, another follow-up regarding transitioning.

After the D-10 visa do I HAVE to quit Korea, or could I then leave and return on a tourist visa, keep my phone, apartment, bank account? I ask because I'd like to stay here till next May and work-on-line towards my MA TESOL (and not work at a school here in Korea). Ideally, the D-10 would take me to the end of Feb 2013, then I could leave in March and return on a tourist visa for another three months. Could this work? Cost of living and relocating is such that it just makes sense to stay in Korea if I can.

Thanks for your help and information!

Why not just get a student visa if a 6-month D10 won't work for you?

Cash in the bank, proof of enrollment, letter from the registrar and change your status.

The only problem will be that you need all new documentation to switch back to being a school teacher again (if that is indeed your plan).

Are you saying that I can apply for a Korean student visa even though the on-line course I'm taking (Trinity dip TESOL) is based out of Spain (OxfordTEFL)? Online courses based outside of Korea work for a student visa? I'm sure I can get a letter from OxfordTEFL saying I'm enrolled.
Will that work? If so, sweet! But, what about the 'inbetween time?' The course starts in November. My E-2 visa ends at the end of August.

THANKS!

Sorry.. I thought you said working on your MATESOL.

Looks like 90-day visa runs for you and a new set of documents when you start looking for work again.

Yes, you can keep everything (apartment (provided it was yours to start with), internet, phone, etc.).

You may be able to make changes to your accounts (keep a copy of your ARC (front and back)) but you may not.

My apologies. Yes, I did say MATESOL. I'm waffling between the two programs but leaning more towards the Trinity diploma at this point. I should have said both up front. Just to be absolutely clear, I can:

1. Switch to an D-10 the last week of my current contract, get a new ARC and use that visa till Feb then do a 90-day visa runs to stay longer if I choose.

OR

2. Do 90 day visa runs from the end of my E-2 visa in September.

Which is correct? 1 or 2?

3. Whether I do the E-10/Tourist combo or just the Tourist visa I can keep my apartment, phone, bank, etc, since its all in my name, and I've got money in the bank to keep paying and when and if I decide to work again in Korea I will have to get all new documentation.

Correct?

4. Last question, while on either the D-10 and/or Tourist Visa and working on my on-line degree here, can I also teach out of my apartment for an EU online company that would directly deposits fund into my Korean account????

Trying to figure out the best thing to do while keeping it all legal is so complicated. I can't thank you enough for all your help! YOU ARE INVALUABLE!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

1) - 2)

You can do 1 or 2 = your choice. Both are correct options.
The d10 option will allow you to actually find a job and switch back to an E2 within the 6 month period should the need arise.

3) yes

4) not legally but it is under the radar since it is not a Korean employer.
