I just had an experience where a recruiter posted on Craigslist an opening in a specific neighborhood (let's say Appeujong-dong). She replied to me quickly, but after a couple emails she suggests a position to me in Gangseo. I'm really confused as to why she would do that, seeing as I replied to a Craigslist ad with a specific job opening in Gangnam.

Does she just think I don't understand the 'gus' and 'dongs'?
What do I do in this instance? Email her back saying no, in fact, I am not interested in this position because I responded out of interest to position X, and is that position actually still open?
...Confused.... Confused

Haha learned it the hard way. I emailed her back saying I was interested in this position X that you advertised.

Her response?
"I submitted your information to this school already. We have to wait to hear from them."

...This position doesn't exist. Rolling Eyes

Two things: Location and Standard

Standard first. You will see this happen all the time. I applied for a Gangnam position too. I went to the interview, and they said they had a second location for the school where I would teach sometimes. I asked about apartment and days I would work there. They balked and wouldn't answer me. I signed the contract, got the same pay, and luckily didn't get screwed. The teachers already at the second location got the boot though. Any new teachers hired were treated fairly until they left.

Another experience was were I requested a middle school and was offered 2 middle school jobs and 1 elementary. Why would they offer the elementary if they had 2 middle school jobs? I asked for one of them, and the next day they said, "The middle school you requested already has a teacher and the other one is looking for a female teacher. How about the elementary school?"

Did they have middle school jobs at all? Possibly not. I took that job offer as well and stayed the whole year. So, don't assume it's like a car salesman in this aspect. Recruiters are in other ways, but you can still get some good offers even though what you think was first and best is not really going to happen.

Now for location. Notice Gangnam is a rich area? That is why they market the jobs less appealing to naive (not native, naive) teachers. The locations are perfectly fine, but if we do any research we see Gangnam, Hongdae, and Bundang sound better than other areas. This is not always true, but if you don't know you tend to go with what is written down. I have steered away from this way of thinking and found good jobs near more advertised places.

Is there any reason why Gangseo is not acceptable? It looks like a good area between Bucheon (another good area) and Gangnam. I'd check it out. See what the contract states, see what the teachers there say.

I'm trying to remain open-minded in terms of location.

Long story short, I come from a small town and I miss the big city, and I miss being able to go out at night! A concern of mine is being within reasonable access to Itaewon for the weekend...(gaydar should be going off now) because we all like to let off some steam once in a while and preferably not have the cab ride home cost too much haha

How much is a cab from Gangseo near the river to Itaewon? Anyone?
Maybe if I knew more about the cab fare situation (for when the subway isn't running early morning) I'd be more relaxed looking at positions farther from the 'party' areas Sad

If I remember correctly, I paid 30,000 from SNU (to the northeastern part of Seoul). My guess for you is 35,000, but maybe they can pick up people along the way and reduce the cost. You could just crash at a cheap motel, 35,000 or under.

I'm interviewing with Avalon (I think the elementary branch) in Mapo-gu tonight.

That's perfect location-wise I think.
