Yikes,
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2012/06/117_113399.html
Innocent Korean people are being targeted by illegally-staying migrant workers. I dont understand why the government doesnt act to stop their crimes.
Yes, spend less time worrying about Korean crimes.
South Korea has become a paradise for foreigners from poor countries. Our citizens are being forced to compete with migrant workers for low-income jobs.
Wouldn't want to compete with anyone huh, and there isn't anything wrong with paying even higher prices.
"Such messages are posted on the website of a xenophobic group, claiming over 6,000 members. The group believes that the National Assembly should revise laws to ban local firms from hiring migrant workers and disallow marriages between Korean women and men from poor nations.
The group is just one of a dozen Internet-based organizations campaigning against immigrants. Some groups jointly launched a center to receive reports on foreign workers overstaying their visas and called for a merciless crackdown on them."
But Korean males marrying foreign women, that's a different story.
"Prof. Lee Myung-jin of Korea University said the government must focus on educating the younger generation about multicultural values."
I think the Prof. forgot about educating the parents so they can educate their children. The future doesn't look bright |

Sounds like the American arguement over illegals in their country. Can't blame people during a time of high unemployment of wanting a job. Many illegals in the country do compete for jobs and keep wages down. During a boom economy this isn't as much of a problem because there are plenty of jobs and people can be more choosy. During a downturn, this seems to be the natural order of things. However, many migrant workers are no doubt are here legally and don't commit crimes. Never good to discriminate. In my own country, I'd prob say tighten requirements and limit access during economic downturns and loosen it up a bit during economic booms. |

Wait, so you're implying that making it harder for migrant workers to enter a country by "tightening requirements" is somehow not discrimination? |

Yea, you hear people in the US asking the government all the time to stop letting American citizens from marrying who they want.
This is Korea being Korea. More government control is what they always scream for. They're always concerned with what the foreigners are doing. How many illegal things happen right in front of people's eyes everyday and nothing is said or done? |

Actually, yeah. There are serious concerns over Green-card spouses and people using fake marriages as a way towards citizenship. That and concerns over the exploitation of mail-order brides. |

Not to mention the whole gay marriage thing. |

It's a protectionist policy, not discrimination. |

"Discrimination: Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of an individual based on their membership - or perceived membership - in a certain group or category."
The two are not mutually exclusive. |

Closed border policies are protectionist. Nobody gets in. Everyone is treated equally = no discrimination.
Increased requirements to limit applications are protectionist (add CBC's to protect our kids, add degrees to ensure qualifications, add apostilles to ensure legitimacy of the documents, etc.). Again, everyone must meet the standard so there is no discrimination.
E2 policies, as an example, are prejudicial; they only accept English teachers from 7 countries even though there are many more who are equal or better in terms of abilities, qualifications and experience.

Nothing wrong with Korean citizens being upset about illegal migrant workers. It only becomes an issue when they start using that as an excuse to lambast all of us. |

Actually I meant more for illegal immigration than marriages. However, the marriage law prob should be changed if it hasn't been already. Used to be 2 years before you could get permanent residency. Then the women would leave. Maybe, it should be moved to 5 or 7 years. Would cut down on the fraud. Plus hot women from poor countries might have to really weigh if they want to be married to a dud from a rich country for a long time or get off their lazy butt and work hard for something in their own country. Two years was a short sacrifice for them but 5 or 7 years more of a lengthy sacrifice and time commitment. |

Mama prefers a white or in some cases a black american teacher for their kids. Some of the other countries are poorer and will most likely attract economic migrants although some rich country english teachers can be to a point. However, I think Koreans would have a real hard time being taught by people from poorer countries. Just look at the reaction to Filipino teachers here. Sad but true. Us 7 nation English teachers get some discrimination at times, though far less so than others. |

As for protectionism, I believe in free trade amongst rich industrialized nations. But, not between poor and rich countries as much reduced wages and environmental regulations can be used to compete unfairly against us. To each his own. |

This is South Korea, certainly not Japan and never will be like Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore where globalisation for those places really has taken off in the affirmative.
In South Korea people are stuck in a time warp. I was here ten years ago and nothing has changed in the form of cultural acceptance of minorities or English speaking educators.
Globalisation for Koreans means simply adapting to new technologies, certainly not intercultural experiences or cultural awareness. The only Koreans that have accepted Western values are those that have left S.K permanently and never want to return.
It is synonymous to the Europeans that have adapted to living in the North and South Americas, Canada or Australia, and admit with conviction that those countries are better than Europe. At least I have accepted my adopted country positively, though there are always minor issues.
There are no antiforeigner groups in Australia, yes we do have racist issues I should know I have experienced racism myself, but generally people are amicable and welcoming and have changed a lot. Koreans will never accept anyone that is not Korean, simple. They look down on the Chinese, that are their cultural and genetic predecessors why would they accept a Phillipino taking away a job meant for a Korean, and as if the Phillipinos here have it easy anyway.
Anti-foreigner groups on the rise in South Korea does not surprise me, considering they are so ethnocentric and we all know given any opporutunity will attack verbally or physically any foreigner that is in a vulnerable position. I have been here four months and have experienced violent threats and ridiculing by native Koreans several times. One incident was in kangnam on a Saturday at 3 pm! And by no means do I have swarthy skin, I look like a Brit but am originally from the European continent. I am not German.
I have no respect for most Koreans nor would I live here permanently. They simply can not and will not accept cultural diversity, that is was makes Australia a great country. I can not think of anything more boring than mono culture. Homogeneity in paradigms both social and creative does not make for diversity, Korea is not a culturally diverse country like Hong Kong, Singapore or Japan, (Japan to a lesser extent)
And that people make claims South Korea is a developed country have rocks for membranes in their skull. Developed? So if it were a developed country why is everyone, including myself complaining about the lack of civililty and its racist stereotyping of foreigners?
For the record, a sticky should me made with the header: ''Racist Koreans'' need I elaborate? |
