I read the books after watching season one. I was surprised at how close the series was to the book. I had no intention of watching he series but I saw a 'making of' advert for the show and saw how much care they seemed to put into making the show good and authentic so I took a chance on it and loved it.

While I was surprised at how much they deviated from the book this season I am not shocked. I can't think of too many movies or TV shows that stay 100% consisten with the books they were based on.

Even The Godfather which was as close as I saw had a few. Maybe the first Bourne movie, Harry Potter maybe, I can't recall.

Here is something I can't recall but was Renly gay in the book? I don't recall. Maybe he was and I dont' remember?

This may seem minor but I expected the direwolves to be a bit bigger. They seemed very big in the book. By the time Robb Stark went to war they were pretty darn big in the book.

The new books can't come out soon enough for me.

As for other series. I love 'Breaking Bad', 'True Blood' and 'Dexter' however, for me the best series of all time was 'The Wire' with 'The Sopranos' a close second. I thought at its best 'The Sopranos' had no equal but for consistenly excellent televison with nary an episode that was not thrilling to watch, 'The Wire' had no equal. There were times i was bored with 'The Sopranos' such as when Tony was in the hospital dreaming. I could have done without that. Plus the way it ended without giving anyone closure.

It was alluded to but didn't have straight up gay sex like in the show. It wasn't a change I was thrilled about but whatever. And yeah, the direwolves were supposed to be as big as horses but that's ok. CGI is expensive. I also imagined the wolves to be a lot more uglier and dangerous looking as well.

Breaking Bad is awesome. Can't wait for the last season!

Prior to the show's release GRRM did say that they were intended to be lovers, fwiw. It would have been difficult to imply that, perhaps, but in explicitly explaining it they made it more central than it was in the books. I don't think that was really necessary.

Now extinct dire wolves were only slightly bigger than grey wolves are today.

Quote:
The first specimen of a dire wolf was found at near Evansville, Indiana. The dire wolf was not quite like any animal surviving today. It was similar in overall size and mass to a large modern gray wolf. This means it was about 1.5 meters (5 feet) long and weighed about 50 kilograms (110 pounds) on average.

The dire wolf looked fairly similar to the modern gray wolf; however, there were several important differences. The dire wolf had a larger, broader head and shorter, more sturdy legs than its modern relative.

But they were longer in the tooth.

That may be so, but in the book they were described as being much bigger. As was noted, CGI is expensive.

Something tells me the show's producers were appealing to a certain 'demographic' with the explicit Renly thingy.

Overall, I like the show. Can't wait for the books. I feel so badly for the Starks. Sorry if I am spoiling anything. Everyone except Sansa. She pissed me off too much. I want her to get reuinited with her family but she pissed me off. I know she's a bit thick but going back to when she wouldn't back up her sister I was disappointed. I know why she did it but I didn't like it. Its family for one and an animal and a boy got killed because of her inaction.

As far as people I want to see some comeuppance happen to the most is old man Frey.

After the books are done and this may be roundly booed by most of you and if you do, I would understand but I would love to read a pre-quel. Basically leading up to Robert Baratheon's rebellion and ending with the mad king dying.

Very curious to read the books after hearing some of the feedback on the series.

I'd like that as a show or movie but I think the series already mentioned the war so many times that we have most of the details already. I'd rather read about something that happened before like Aegon's War of Conquest.

Do it man. You won't be able to put it down. I got the first one and ended up getting the rest a week later before I even finished the first.

Kindle or actual? My pal says he's let me read them for free on his kindle, but I understand people recommending getting the books.

I'm not that demographic, but as I mentioned before, I think they use it as a vehicle to kind of speed things up/make things clearer for people who didn't read the book.

Really disliked Sansa up until around book 3 when her character started to make more sense and was more sympathetic. Her mom on the other hand was never a character I cared for.

GRRM did a few novella's in the world before the events of ASOIAF. I read the first one and it was entertaining though a bit too campy for me. This is the first scifi/fantasy series I've read since elementary school, so I don't know how valid my opinion is. The prequels deal a lot with Robert's great grandfather.

I also agree with the poster who said that we've gotten so much information about that time period that I feel like GRRM DID write a real prequel.

the last episode pissed me off, but i don't know how i would have felt if i hadn't read the books.

**spoilers**

what's up with the white walkers scene? they show jon snow heading to mance rayder's camp, but before mance makes his attack on the wall, the white walkers attack in full force? so is mance not going to make an attack? or is he going to unite with the night's watch and attack the white walkers?

**/end spoilers**

i don't know where the story in the show is going. it's making no sense to me.

That part followed the timeline of the books.
