Recently, I had a friend ask me a question that struck me as a bit odd. He asked why Koreans obsess over pictures, documentaries, and whole broadcast specials dedicated to food.

Now, I haven't lived back home or out of the country for a while, and I assumed that other countries engage in such things just as much as others. I relied on the beauty of various non-Korean works dedicated to food to say that the food craze isn't so odd--US movies like "Deconstructing Supper," "FoodMatters," or "How to Cook Your Life," and Greece's "Big Night" (which I admit don't compare to the food scenes in Asian movies such as "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman," "Tampopo"), and in English-written books like anything written by Amy Tan, Toni Morrison, Laura Esquivel, and so many others. But, in the end, I had to admit...I really don't know. I'm somewhat out of the non-Korea loop of sorts.

I also didn't think it was strange to find pictures of food on Facebook or on one's cellular phones, which he found to be "utterly flabbergasting" and signs of psychological problems.

So, what's the deal? Is this attention to food odd?

After a brief headcount I'm afraid that it is your friend who's odd.

I nearly always take pictures of what I'm abut to eat if only to assist forensic investigators to determine what was my last meal and where I took it.

You have a nice list of good movies there.

Thanks, I thought so too. But to be honest, when I was back in the US I seldom saw people taking pictures of food and to be honest seldom do I see food on my family or friends' Facebook pages in the US. I was really thinking perhaps it was weird. Thanks...now I feel normal again (I have a couple cuisine pics too)! Smile
