I've just bought a new computer. I don't have a monitor. My apartment is small. In an effort to clamp down on clutter, I'm going to use my TV as a monitor. Suggestions on the best way to do this? My TV has an S video cable input. My computer has HDMI, DVI and VGA outputs. I guess I will need a converter. Best place to get that kind of thing in Seoul would be Yongsan, right? Any recommendations for stalls or stores there?

All you need is a VGA to S Video adapter, shouldn't cost more than a few bucks (few thousand won).

Some things to note though:

1. VGA/S Video doesn't transmit sound so no audio will be coming out of the TV's built in speakers. Unless you got some computer speakers already hooked up, you wont be getting any sound at all. Your best bet would be an HDMI cable from your pc to tv since HDMI transmits sound and audio.

2. TV's generally have lower resolutions and refresh rates than pc monitors, so just be aware. If you are planning on high res online gaming, you would need a pc monitor.

what ibsen said.

you either connect speakers to ur computer's soundcard along with the dvi to s-video(or whichever) cable...

http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-40849-RapidRun-Flying/dp/B000JHEZEQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340193108&sr=1-2&keywords=dvi+to+s-video+cable

or get sth like this...

http://www.amazon.com/Composite-S-video-Converter-Adapter-Input/dp/B004FM3EF2

my oldest uses one of our computers, that has two hd3850(2 dvi outputs only on each card) video cards, with a 42"wall-mounted pdp. sony speakers working well connected to the computer. not the best of set-ups, but it works well enough.

I went through this recently...all the VGA to S-Video converters I tried didn't work. Never solved the problem...ended up buying a new TV. Hope you have more luck than me!

Yes, it is. I'd forgotten about those issues. It's likely to be a temporary measure until I decide what to do with the TV.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, it is.

crt resolution is so low you wont be able to read text on the screen. as you've recognized, you'd be better off getting a new hdtv

Good luck. I just went through the agony of monitor shopping. There are a bloody million of the things and unless you're planning on paying a mint for top of the line, they all seem to fall into the same 50/50, good/bad qualities making making an easy choice a near impossibility.

I ended up buying an AOC i2353. The reviews I Googled ran the gamut from OK to excellent and they were on sale at Emart for 249'000: just about the best price for a 23" ips monitor you're going to find in Korea. If you've got the hardware to run it, there's a decent 27", 2560x1440 ips by some Korean company called Yamakasi: the q270 that's supposed to be quite decent.

if u get a hdtv for a monitor i would recommend getting a HDMI cable rather than using those yellow/white cables. the difference is quite significant.

I hooked up my comp to my CRT TV while back and damn it hurt my eyes. I wouldn't suggest using it for long time.
