|
|
Has anyone ever heard of food being provided by an employer in a contract? It seems from the wording of a contract I have been given to review that the monthly salary includes 300,000 won of food per month, which I am assuming would mean that my actual salary (that goes into my pocket) would be 300,000 won less than what is quoted? This adds up to about $17 CAD a day for a 20 day work month, and I am assuming this means that they provide meals for teachers at the institute.
This amount seems a little excessive.
I have yet to clarify this with the potential employer but any comments, opinions, experience with this is appreciated. |

Are you sure that this isn't the allowance for your apartment? Some contracts don't provide an apartment but just give you money to pay for your own. |

Here is the exact wording from the contract:
4.1 SALARY: Employer shall pay Employee as compensation for all services a total aggregate monthly of salary 1,900,000won for each month of the contract period-including 300,000won for food with Employer.
I'm a total newbie so I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with this. I guess if two meals a day are provided to you at work that isn't such a bad deal, but still. It's a bit misleading as to what salary you will actually get in your pocket. I guess them's the breaks of moving along in the process - finding out the REAL story. |

I worked at 2 schools where I got free lunch every day, and none of my pay was docked to cover it. (1.9 million at both schools).
If they are proposing feeding you and taking out 300,000 won to pay for it, that would seem unusual to me. And the amount does seem excessive.
Moreover, I think you'll want the option of NOT eating at school. Especially if the food is as unexciting as my school lunches were. |

Don't sign that contract with that clause in it. What meals with your employer most likely means is eating lunch with your kindergarteners. This amounts to an extra class instead of a lunch break, which isn't worth doing for free. The fact that he wants to charge you 6000 won a day for the privilege just adds insult to injury. You're better off getting paid cash and going out for bulgogi every day. |

I receive a daily stipend of 3,500 won for lunch expenses on top of my base salary. Ostensibly it's to pay for my lunch at my school. Each time I sign in for lunch there, 3,500 is deducted from my monthly allowance. If I choose to eat out, the amount is not deducted and the balance is paid out to me on payday.
15,000/day seems way too excessive. The food had better be damn good. |

I would be asking the question about it immediately. It does seem very unusual. Don't risk your monthly salary only being 1.6 instead of 1.9. |

300,000 is not worth if for hagwon food. You can get a much better deal eating out every day. 1.9 million is not even a good starting salary. Also, if you are getting two meals per day then you are at work too long. |

By the exact wording you should have nothing to worry about. They want you to think you're getting the value of a 2.2 million position for a salary of 1.9.
To be clear ask them how much money you get to keep to send home if you want to send all of it on a given month.
I received free lunches ordered from local restaurants for office staff - at least I did for the first six months. Then I was asked to pay my share, which was reasonable, especially given how cheap Korean food usually is. Now, in my second year, staff isn't eating together anymore and my now-past director keeps encouraging me to eat at the new restaurant he now owns (as a paying customer).
However it's arranged, Koreans make sure this foreigner doesn't go hungry; I wish parents did the same with their children. |

I'm not a lawyer, but I did go to law school. I'd definitely check that clause out. The problem is that word "including". It's just vague enough that it could mean 1.6 million, plus food. If it said, "in addition to 300, 000 for food" you'd have no problem, but this way, your employer has a pretty strong arguement that it mean 1.6 million.
Note that it says "total aggregate". The aggregate could be money plus services. |
