1) Party A agrees to pay Party B for a one-way ticket from his/her country to South Korea.[/quote]
This doesn't necessarily mean that I have to pay for my own flight out there and get reimbursed on arrival. I know also that it doesn't mean that the school will prepay for my flight.
But this is what the recruiter sent me before I applied for this position.

Here's a summary of the work conditions at the school:
*School: **********
*Location: Bucheon (right between Incheon and Seoul on the West side)
*Start: August 1st 2012
*Salary: 2.1 million Won/month
*2.1 million won Bonus at completion of the contract
*Free Round Trip Airfare provided by the employer (prepaid) |
Now if it didn't say that it was prepaid, then I would've guessed that I would have to pay for my flight out there.
I should've questioned that before hand but I didn't even think about it.
I have taken out a new credit card and will have to use that. The whole idea of working in Korea was to clear some of my debts but I guess I must take on more debt temporarily in order to do this.
Again, thanks for your advice everyone.

Read this. Read it all. This is what I banked on when I came to Korea. My hagwon, in Dongducheon, changed the rules to "reimbursed" after the recruiter had already spoken the words "paid for". I told the school there's no way I can come if I have to be the one to pay the way. Didn't matter if I was right. Ttompatz set the tone. That was fall 2008. Well, I got there and didn't pay for it. |

Just to let everyone know that I have managed to booked my flight to Korea. I had to go to my bank to temporarily increase my overdraft but at least I've got it sorted without having to grovel to my hagwon/recruiter. Cheaper than having to use a credit card.
Managed to get a cheap, direct flight with Asiana who I have been told are a good airline.

I guess you're just gonna throw caution to the wind. I can't blame you for being broke, but you can't ask us for help if you get mistreated.
Let us know how it turns out. |

Bit harsh, no? Advice is free
OP, can't you get some temporary work in the UK before you fly out? Even if it's in addition to a full-time job it's extra money you can't spend, 'cause you'll always be working or sleeping. A month of that will be enough for a wedge in your pocket. |

Damnit, I know the information might be a little late right now, but I stumbled on a website the other day that offered airline ticket purchase assistance for foreign TESL teachers traveling to Korea. They charge you $150 up front, take down your visa info, and then legally dock your first paycheck for the cost of the flight. No interest, nothing, just the $150 fee. I have no experience with this, of course, so use it at your own risk. But now I can't find the website! Google is not helping. I'll continue to try and track it down. |

I think it is the Arrival store. They offer it but I think it is a limited.

Looking I can not find the offer. I remember it too from the past. |

Do you know when the school will reimburse you? There are many horror stories where teachers are never reimbursed. The school or recruiter should have paid this. I am surprised the recruiter didn't offer to help you with the expense. Are you teaching at a public or private school. If your answer is private, you will probably never see a dime. Public schools take their time but eventually you will get paid. Best of luck to you. |

That's a bit of a harsh assessment. Everyone I know who has taught in Korea (myself included) has been reimbursed for airfare by their hagwon, as promised, within a month of arrival. Don't forget about the silent majority. |

Yes, that was the website. Sucks though that it's a limited offer. I'm gonna keep my eye on it! |

All I've been told about reimbursement is that, once I've opened a bank account in Korea they will pay me. They say usually within three weeks.
At the end of the day, I've paid for my flight without having to grovel and I have sent them an invoice too making it clear that I expect reimbursement ASAP.
