I'm just starting to get into into it.

What i've done so far:

-downloaded almost 80 GB of movies/music onto the XBOX's hard drive.. (so I can watch DVD-quality movies on my tv...) I NEVER go to the video store! It's all online....
-networked my home pc with the XBOX using a router. My xbox is online now and gets tv/radio streams from the internet. Also, I get up to the hour weather forecasts and IMDB movie look up for any movie I want...

This is not to mention all the hacked games I'm playing from off the Internet...

XBOX and the XBMC software is a BEAST if you're into multimedia options...

Couple buddies back home modded.
I'm thinking about getting one, and modding it.
You mod it yourself?

You get most games off the net? Back home we just rent, and copy, but here it's all korean, and i wouldn't know where to rent.

Any tips? Mod chip type?

If you're already in Korea, there's no point in trying to do the mod yourself. You can get the chip installed for less than the cost of buying one yourself, and without the hassle of doing the installation on your own. If you're not going to use Xbox Live, there's no reason not to get it modded, and many reasons to do it.

I got mine done two days ago and am very, very happy with the results. Modchip and a 120GB hard drive installed for 130,000 won. (You can also get it with an 80GB drive for 110,000, but why not spend the extra 20k for 50% more drive space?) The chip I got is the Xecuter2. (For a good rundown on various chips, check out Xboxscene.com.)

Xbox Scene is a great site to check out for all kinds of info on different mods and things you can do once your Xbox is chipped. Very helpful forums there too.

Here's a question for all those with a modded Xbox: where do you get your games? Do you buy retail ones (needed if you want to play on Live), burned copies at Yongsan, hard drive loads at Yongsan, or do you download your own and just FTP them to the system?

Personally, I've got zero retail games and picked up one Yongsan burn (wanted the disc so I could see how the files are arranged on the DVDs) and 6 HD-loads when I got my system modded. I've also started checking out BitTorrent downloads, but they take a bit of tweaking - especially if you're on a Mac.

There are no good Xbox tools (that I've found) written for the Mac, so it all needs to be done in Virtual PC, which - while functional - ain't fast.

What about getting my Xbox which is currently on the PAL system modified for the Korean/US system (NTSC)?. Can both systems operate on the same console or does it need to be one or the other?

I found a place in Youngson who will do it for 120K.
If you do not have an XBox, he will sell you a kit* for 300K in cash, or 320K with credit card.
*Kit:
Modded XBox console with 120GB hard drive
XBox Live

Why stop with a 120GB drive (that gives you 110GB of usable space in computer speak), when you can go with a 160GB drive that registers as a 137GB drive (and gives you 127GB of usable space).

An extra 17GB of love. It's what I did when I tossed a hard drive into my PS2. (Same deal with an Xbox if I had mine modified, but I rarely use it).

I solved this problem by buying a PAL TV second hand - it was big, about 68cm and we picked it up for about 120,000 including delivery.

Bought a modded Xbox with 120gb hard drive, 9 Xbox games installed, 3000 emul games installed, and 1 extra controller for W310,000 yesterday at Yongsan. Console+mod chip were W260,000.

Update to this bit of info. I've found three Mac tools (OSX) for dealing with Xbox ISOs. Xbox Backup Toolkit, Xbox DND Tools and Xdisc. All are available here.

I have all three, but only use Xdisc. It works flawlessly and keeps me from having to muck about with Virtual PC. If you have a Mac and a modded Xbox, it's the tool to get.

Oh, and as for hard drive size, I was getting my box modded at one of the shops in Yongsan (Trader) and the two options were 80GB and 120GB, so I went with the 120. I may upgrade to a bigger drive in the future if I need to - and it's looking like I'll eventually need to, at the rate I'm loading up movies and games. Very Happy

Walter, you asked where to get games. as far as i can make out Bit Torrent and suprnova.org is far and away the easiest way to go. i've gotten about 15 games from there since April, and only NBA Ballers didn't work for me (I've since got it in Thailand)
The quality of the games are perfect, and once you've made the ethical leap to software thief/pirate/whatever, you should have no problems.

When you download them they are usually in .rar format so unrar them and you get a nice ISO. From there you can burn straight to DVD and have your own copy of the game, or if you have more time or no DVD burner, use an ISO buster to get all the files in the ISO and transfer them across to your X Box using a router.

I usually go down the burn DVD road cause i pass the DVD onto friends after I'm done, but even when I have the DVD, i copy it onto my hard drive to reduce the load times.

The only problem can be the download time...most games are over 2GB, so you're looking at a few days even in Korea, especially if there aren't many seeds.

When I bought my system I had "Unreal Tournament" installed on the hard drive, only to find out that it's 1 player unless I use Xbox Live. Bummer. Crying or Very sad

So, let me get this straight....you turned your xbox into a regular PC.

Wow.... Razz
