Hello there,
I have no idea about the state of game consoles these days so I would appreciate your advice.
Which one should I buy? Why?
Thanks |

personally i'm an xbox man but not one of those crazy fanboys who'll get all arsey over consoles.
i don't like the ps3 controllers so i went with the xbox, plus it was cheaper.
if i remember correctly, the online playstation shop thing will be closing down in korea to stop kids playing games for 6 hours straight (ridiculous) so it has that going against it.
xbox live is good but there don't seem to be too many people who play the games over here. i'm always lagging these days because i get stuck playing games outside the local area.
i guess it depends on how much you want exclusive titles. i'm sure there are a bunch on each console that the other doesn't have. gran tourismo springs to mind.
also, only met one guy in korea with a ps3.
xbox - cheaper, more owners locally to play with. however the games are region encoded and you have to pay for xbox live.
ps3 - probably better titles, region free but more expensive and i don't know anyone to swap games with or play online with |

Both are decent systems with a couple years left in their cycle. I personally prefer PS3 but an argument can be made for both.
I like the built in Blu-ray player, I like the controller better and most importantly the few exclusives I'm most interested in are on PS3.
The first step in making the decision should be looking at the exclusives. Do you really want Halo, or the newest Final Fantasy or ????? There are various sites you can check to compare. |

I own a 360 back in the States, and even when I go home and visit, it doesn't get much play.
I bought a PS3 in Korea, and think it's far superior. A much better all around gaming experience.
I'm a + member, and that service is ridiculously worth it. Don't enjoy the 360 store at all. The PSN Korean store will be shutdown, but since it's next to impossible for foreigners to access that, and if you have an account from your home country, the PSNK is (next to) useless anyway, that is moot.
One annoying thing about the PS3 is sometimes they require downloads and installs before you play the game, but the disadvantages are far offset by the advantages.
Regarding cost, the PS3 should come with a bigger hard drive, built in wireless, and a bluray player. Those are not even perks, so much as necessities in this generation of gaming. |

A year or two ago I probably would have said Xbox, now definitely PS3. It took a while, but developers finally seem to be able to squeeze more out of the PS3's hardware. Cross-platform games these days actually manage to sell more on the PS3 than Xbox and are starting to finally catch up - and even surpass - in terms of quality (short of the disaster that was Skyrim at launch.) And hey, free online and the ability to play Blurays should you want.
The shutting down of Korea's PSN is indeed a little vexing, but I've heard it's only a temporary measure until Sony gets the service up to snuff on new, even more ridiculously restrictive Korean Internet standards. As if requiring your national ID number wasn't already enough (as a foreigner, you can't even register.) In any case, you can still access the American one. I predict a boatload of Koreans with fake American addresses popping up on the US PSN soon enough. |

I prefer PS3 if only for the fact that the games are not region locked like they are on xbox. There is considerable lag playing fighting games like Mortal Kombat 2, but I haven't had issue with stuff like Civilizations Revolutions. |

PS3.
I use PS3 media server and stream movies to the PS3 from my laptop. It supposedly works for XBOX but I haven't tried it. I own both systems but prefer the PS3. Whenever I turn on the XBOX there is some worry about the thing dying with the infamous RROD. The PS3 comes with a blu ray player. That's extra value for the money. I like the controllers too because they charge up when hooked to the machine. The XBOX you need to replace the batteries or charge them up manually. |

play-and-charge kits...

rrod is a lot less common, but, yes, if u have an older version, it can always b a worry. ive had 3 360s and only one (think a 2005 version) rrod'ed and i'm pretty sure it was because the first fix on it was a band-aid one, which led to the gpu and cpu completely frying not long after. other two, including one that's been opened at least 20 times, and has been hacked, cracked, and smacked to death, have been fine. don't forget about the ps3's yellow light of death - admittedly, only know one person who has had that problem. i also admit that the ps3, from its release, has been a better piece of hardware.
i have played both, and as said here, they are both fine. two of my friends own a ps3 now. both seem to b somewhat fanboys of the ps3. one of them has had both systems. he (i hope he adds some to this discussion) seems to prefer the ps3 quite more than the 360 although he hasnt really given any clear answer as to why. he likes online play, so maybe the free psn access/stuff was a bit of a selling point for him. i have no desire or requirement for online play or dlc, so that argument is irrelevant to me.
regarding games, and unmodded systems, the ps3 wins due to its region-free nature in my opinion - although nhl 2012 was FINALLY region-free for the 360. however, don't really think that the ps3 wins with any of their exclusive offerings. have heard, not really noticed, that more ps3 games have had graphical issues, but dont quote me on that. i personally see no difference in the two, although the tv itself could play a part. also looks like the ps3(modded) can play kinect games now too...

OP, you may just want to hold off on purchasing either of the two and look into cloud-gaming as that's supposed to be the way things are going to head in the future. then, you may only need to buy a controller for both the ps3 and the 360 and enjoy both systems. |

I'm sorry, what? I'm not really much of a fanboy, but exclusives are pretty much THE reason to own a PS3. Uncharted, Demon's Souls, Wipeout, God of War, Heavy Rain, etc. are all games that received tons of critical acclaim and have sold thousands of PS3s. I love the 360 for XBLA exclusives but outside of that you have very few games that are actually exclusive and of the ones that aren't on the PS3, you can find them on the PC instead (Alan Wake for example) so it's not beyond the realm of possibility to play them sans 360. |

can only admit to playing 2 of the games u mentioned(GoW and wipeout), and can only say that GoW was good. u may b right though.
my statement also meant that even with THEIR exclusives(which some sites say aren't really that special) doesn't mean that the ps3 wins. just because u have more, doesn't mean they're better. i haven't bought a ps3(and don't plan to, esp not now that it, and the 360, is nearing the end of its lifecycle) yet, and i used to b a big fanboy of ps1, ps2, psp, etc. i stand by what i said earlier; the systems r basically the same. |
