|
|
Heard of one person that came in on a Friday and flew back home by Sunday night.
I know emergencies can happen but man that isn't even giving this job/place a chance.
Why go through all that time, money and effort and then leave so suddenly? |

A friend of mine flew to Australia (from Manchester, UK) and stayed less than 24 hours - it took more time to get there! It was only a holiday and not a job, but she was flying with her ex-boyfriend and her new boyfriend, another friend, didn't have a ticket or much wanted to hang around. Who knows what can crop up in between applying and actually getting here. |

There was a New Zealander that proceeded me at my teaching job that lasted only 3 days and left probably taking the money they hand you up front with him.
There is no obvious advantage to quitting a teaching job so early, so obviously he didn't like the school too much. |

Without more details that it's just speculation. Who knows? Maybe the school was a total dump. Maybe the boss yelled at him when he arrived. Maybe the apartment had mold on the wall, flooding in the kitchen and smelled of old kimchi. There are many reasons (some legit, some not) why someone would leave as soon as they arrive. |

Knew one teacher, who was to replace me. Came over, her mother was in a serious accident, had to fly back a day or two later.
Are you sure the person when back? Some people fly over on the schools dime, then disappear. |

Happened once at a school I work for a few years back. Dude arrived on a Friday and left on the Sunday. I had lunch and coffee with him on the Saturday. Not sure why he left. Not sure why he even came. |

Culture Shock can hit some people pretty hard.
Best thing to do is make foreign friends as quickly as you possibly can... don't be isolated... and don't make any decisions for at least a week after arrival because you're probably not thinking clearly due to the culture shock. |

Not sure if it's true:
I heard that a hogwon gave a guy a plane ticket in advance routed through Japan. Well the guy didn't arrive at the airport in Busan(?). The hogwon checked and he'd got off the plane in Japan.
I wondered if he worked in Japan, and got a Korean school to pay for his flight over. |

He wouldn't be the first. Others have openly announced their plans to do this - some right here on this forum. |

They must have been total backpackers as their luggage would have been forwarded on. |

I suspect people who do this are usually idiots, but then maybe there are cases where a person gets here and realises their hagwon isn't providing anywhere near the standards that they promised. In that case I'd support somebody just saying 'sod this' and leaving. It should be a good lesson to the hagwon owner |

Not enough information.
Could be more to the story, like another corrupt hagwon pulling all the corrupt tricks posted time and again on this forum.
My first hagwon, an international institute in Busan, promised me a one bedroom apartment, typical amenities like a washing machine, etc. I arrived during the winter and was put in a slum house that had been subdivided into separate units for a number of teachers. No oil, no heat, no hot water. The bathroom, only a toilet, no sink, but lots of spiderwebs. The washing machine, a broken one in an outside alley. Work visa - the hagwon hadn't processed my visa documents. Turnover was so high, it had a practice of bringing in teachers illegally to see if they would adapt to living and work conditions before sending them to Japan on a visa run. The owner would disappear the first few days when the teacher arrived, saying he was attending his mother's funeral. |

Was it a private indoor toilet or were you sharing an outdoor toilet with everyone else in the building? Those outdoor toilets used to be pretty common.
I was supposed to work in Busan once but when I saw the apartment which looked a bit grungy and had a communal outdoor toilet, I said, "No way!"
OP, did you ask the guy or his colleagues why he left so fast? |

It was some chick that had a boyfriend back home. Perhaps they thought they could get through the one year contract but I guess being away was just too much for either of them to handle. |
