..."contemporary American kids may represent the most indulged young people in the history of the world."...

Perhaps they should take a trip to Korea and compare those "indulged" American kids to Korean kids. They'd get a run for their money.

They had a single control group, children in the Andes.

American parents probably don't have the time to properly parent their children, given their work commitments. But I do believe American parents can afford to give their children nice stuff, especially while competing with the Jones's. So I believe American children are comparatively 'spoiled.'

"most indulged young people in the history of the world" = standard yahoo hyperbole

Just by the sheer number of academies kids here are often forced to go to, I doubt Korea is anywhere near #1. Don't mistake inexterienced ESL teachers being unable to control a room of misbehaving Korean kids with them being overindulged. I would hate to grow up in this society.

I wasn't mistaking that. I think you missed the point. I was speaking about the kids I see on the street screaming and throwing a temper tantrum making their parents look like complete tools. I'm talking about the kids' obvious manipulation to get what they want when they want. And seeing the parents oblige to their every whimsical desire 9.9 times out of 10. Korean parent's can't say no to their kids. You've seen it or you willfully choose to ignore it.

Indeed.
Korean kids have a difficult life, but that doesn't mean they don't get what they want when they want it. Really, I think any parent who spends 50 or more hours per week working will feel compelled to spoil their children in an attempt to replace quality time with gifts.

This. How many times have you seen kids running around a restaurant (even expensive ones) while their parents are nowhere to be found or are sitting there ignoring/throwing their hands up in the air to show the "what can you do~" attitude? I had a kid run over to my table, sit with me, babble on and on about this and that and his parents didn't notice and then let him continue to run over and interrupt me and my friends... I see kids climbing all over statues and plants and running around like restaurants are their personal jungle gyms... ridiculous. These same kids are the ones in my classes who grab the papers off my desk, steal my pens and draw all over my lesson plans (on the board and on my papers). I'm continually asking students "Why are you touching this? Is it yours?" "Why are you screaming?" "Why are you kicking your shoes into the air?" while the other teachers just shrug it off. The students even call the principal "ajossi" and constantly speak in banmal (informal language), but nothing really changes. These bad attitudes start at home. How many times have you gotten a lecture like, "Oh well, she's very spoiled at home, so she acts like a baby..." or "Oh, she studies so hard and is so stressed, so her parents said not to make her study or do homework." Ridiculous. How many kids curse you or hit you? If I had ever hit a teacher... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be alive today. I even asked one of my students, "do you act like this at school? (since I'm at a hagwon), and his answer was, "truthfully... yes." and then laughed.

I worked for a daycare in the States, and of course we had problem kids and kids who had parents who really did not care what happened to them, but the level of outright disrespect here, coupled with the "what can you do~ kids will be kids" attitude... it still sometimes floors me.

Possibly the latter. Can't say I've noticed anything out of the ordinary either here or back home. I tend to block out other people's kids - they are annoyances at the best of times.

Most spoiled is probably true.

This wouldn't have been the case back a decade ago when teachers were allowed to use corporal punishment in the classroom. These days, the kids can get away with anything. They're just expelled if the issue is too serious.

The whole 'hands off' Korean kids stems from this movement.

Ive been here since Jan. 2010 which is more than long enough to be able to form an opinion of the place. I also have a wife with a kid on the way who backs me up 100% and echos what I have to say on the issue as she has spent time in America and the West for extended periods of time as well.

For goodness sakes, there are too many spoiled retarded brats in both countries. For every 3rd grade Min Soo who gets dropped some $800 dollar smartphone, there's some Anastasia who gets a Sweet Sixteen Spring Break in Cancun package and an SUV to drive to school. And I'm sure there's some Korea college kid whose Chaebol dad buys them a brand new sports car for achieving the monumental task of not failing college. To think the norm is either some kid in Korea slaving away over books and getting a Pororo pencil case for their birthday and some poor high school kid working away in McDonald's and supporting mom on disability is just silly.

I laughed when I read the article the OP posted - and not in a good way.

One word, people. China. One child policy. Little emperor syndrome.

Temper tantrum throwers extraordinaire. Da Bao (name translation is "Big Baby," which believe me, he is), throws himself on the floor screaming and flailing because he was denied an extra cookie. Grandmother or caretaker (because many of these kids are being raised by remote control as the parents are away pursuing wealth), pops a cookie in his mouth to shut him up.

And shut up he does. Until the next time. And the cycle continues ...

Korean kids are not exactly angels either. And, from the sound of it, neither are American kids. And they probably have plenty of company worldwide.

Look to the parents. It's all about the parents ultimately.

Not sure if this is how you meant it...but it speaks the truth.

Most parents are all about the parents/themselves.
They shouldn't be having kids at all.
