This isn't for sure yet but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be fired from my school. To be honest, I really don't care that much because of all the bullshit that I had to put up with there.
I'm curious what I do once it happens? What happens to my E-2 visa and everything else? Do I need a release letter to go to a different school?
Any information would be helpful. Thanks. |

They will submit paperwork to immigration and your E-2 visa will be cancelled. It will be rather difficult to obtain a new job legitimately.
You will have to go back home and obtain the necessary documents and start from scratch. Unless you have all documents now.
You do not need a release letter unless you plan on using your current employer as a reference. Since they are firing you I don't think that is feasible at this point. Just go back home and gather your documents and pretend this current job situation never happened. I suggest not ever bringing it up again, especially if you want to work in Korea again.
Just my two pennies. |

I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. If you are able to leave on decent terms and get a letter of release you should be able to look for a new job without leaving the country. If you have the letter, you should even be able to switch to a D10 visa at immigration and have 6 months to find new work.
Without a letter of release you may have to leave the country and return, but even then immigration will keep your documents on file if you submitted them for your current job.
I'd recommend talking with your employers, settle money issues, and try to leave on decent terms with a letter of release, then head down to immi and switch to a D10 visa and look for a new job. |

IF they fire you, get it in writing and get the school stamp on it.
It will make your life a LOT easier in regards to immigration.
If you don't get your termination in writing then you will have problems transferring to a new job without all new documentation for a new visa.

What school is it and why are they going to do this to you? |

DON'T name the school until you have left and found a new job!
If you name them and the school finds out, they can make problems for you. Wait until you've got a new job. |

How does that work exactly? Does immigration consider a letter of termination the same as a letter of release? I understand that both of them essentially release you from your contract, but doesn't the letter also have to state that the current employer is ok with you transferring your visa elsewhere?
Is an employer obligated to give you written notice that you've been fired? I would assume that it's necessary for the firing to be official.
Anyway, OP, if you can't get a letter of release or letter of termination (the "your fired" letter) then you can try going to the labor board to complain that you were fired without just cause. If you've been there for more than 6 months, then the school is obligated to give you at least 30 days notice. If not, then you can complain the labor board about THAT as well.
Check to see that your school has been paying for pension, taxes and health insurance. If not, report them.
If you're sure you're going to be fired, then it's best to file a complaint about the school BEFORE they fire you. It will help you a lot when the labor board determines whether or not the school was in the wrong to fire you. If they find that you were unjustly fired, then you can transfer your visa to another employer or to a D10 even without a letter from your school. |

Sorry to say it but most of this is total BS.
The LOR has nothing to do with using the school as a reference.
Immigration will have a record that you worked here before. Your future employer will likely find out. No point in lying about it.
No need to go back home. You can find a job while you're here in country a lot easier than if you're searching from abroad. You can also visit the schools to see how they look before you take an offer. When you get an offer that you like, you can go to Japan (a lot cheaper than going back to your home country) and get the visa there. |

Hahaha sorry to say this but I never once said that my information was 100% accurate. There may be some discrepancies to my analysis of this persons situation given the information he/she gave. I think you just were looking for a reason to insult someone. You saw an open door and ran right through it. Congrats Troglodyte!!! |

When people post their opinions in light of questions and issues like these, they can cause undue hardship and damage when they don't know what they are talking about. I don't mean to sound mean spirited or unkind, but one of the responses to this OP is so far off base and so inaccurate that it begs the question - why not check facts and provide viable information? People will often ask for opinions and advice very specifically here. This unfortunate OP was asking for facts. If we aren't sure we have them, and have them correctly, maybe it's best to be quiet and leave the responses to the folks who know what they're talking about. |

Yours, since you asked.... and your f/u response to Trog is smarmy and immature. It looks like you haven't been around very long. If things go south for you and you come to this board for information, you might get what you're asking for instead of what you need. Just a thought. |

Mr Monkey
I have been teaching in Korea since 2008. I have not been fired from any job. I do know people that have. I am basing my response to the persons question on that. Does the immigration office have answers to these questions? I would assume not given that the person decided to post on the forum. You are trying to make something out of nothing. I take your words as condescending. You are only perpetuating a flawed ideology and viewpoint. So get your facts straight. BTW your round about threats and passive aggressiveness don't do much to withhold whatever image or identity you have created for yourself on this message board.
You should read the original post from this thread carefully.

I think the OP was probably referring to factual information. |
