The "China or Japan" taunt would get under their skin if they were a littler older I think..
jae. |
yeah...when i had an afro etc, people used to ask me if i was jamaican etc....now my students just say i look japanese....so i just either tell them...that's cool...japan has cooler electronics anyways...or i just tell them that if they go to the USA, everyone will call them chinese or japanese because no one knows who or what korea is. |
When I was in Korea, everyone seemd to know (Until World Cup rolled around) that I was an American. I have an afro and I'm Jamaican American...Noone thought I was Jamaican, should I be insulted
But out of curiosity, someone mentioned that in children books, Africans basically look like cavemen or something. Is it like that in a lot of children books? |

yeah...i'm not saying that all people know nothing about korea...but if it wasn't for the fact that i was adopted from korea (from north or south korea? get that a lot), i probably wouldn't know too much about this country...also i probably wouldn't have traveled here and lived here too.
when i was studying at yonsei, i asked some of the non-korean/gyopo students why they chose korea...a lot of them said they wanted to study in japan, but it was too expensive...so they chose the next best/closest....korea. |

It's no secret that Koreans are a narrow-minded lot when it comes to foriegners, and they seem to distrust all of us to some extent, but why do they seem so especially afraid of black people? I wonder if or how the American military presence plays into this. Is it that the overall portrayal of African-Americans in Hollywood films has not generally been too flattering (though I daresay the fear predates film)? Simply a case of an isolated population? Did Botswana and Korea fight a war of which I'm not aware?
I'm stumped. Please share your theories... |
Because Whitey taught them to be that way! |

Well, if they're black they can't possibly be Korean! If they're not Korean then what are they? It scares the bejesus out of them! They must, then, be some kind of anti-Korean (like matter has anti-matter). So a black is a kind of black hole to the Korean universe, like a yawning maw of some hellish realm the opposite of all that is known, human, and Korean. They are branded, by the colour of their skin, to forever be 'unKorean'. No way can a black man fake it, blend in even slightly. He's black, the opposite of light, and so 'alien' it's 'unforgivable'. Of course I'm guessing here, but maybe that's what Koreans 'think' about blacks when they're averse to them. Japanese love them, but they're civilized and bored, right? (and love big Johnsons). |

| I'm sure a lot of white people back in the western countries fear black people as well. |
