What's your point? You're only talking about first-year workers? After a year or two, one should have networked well enough to find a better position.

I desk warm and I am at a rural elementary. My salary is paid by the city hall and they want their money's worth. Bastards also took away extra 5 days of holiday for rural school. My summer camp budget is zip. I told them no money, no fun. They shot back: no fun, no money. Say that again for winter camp.

I've been in EPIK for 6 years.
My first winter vacation was awesome. 1 week of winter camp and about 6 or 7 I think full weeks of not showing up at school. That was back when there were hardly any teachers in my province. Summer was much the same with no desk warming. Just a week of camp. The next year I think it was the same too. And then I moved to another country school and don't recall doing any desk warming there either.
Then I moved to a more urban area and for the last 3 years I have done some desk warming but usually the VP just tells me to kinda show up in the morning and then cut out before noon. So my experience with EPIK has been rather good.

My MOE was one of those that found out that some people had it better than others, and now physically goes around to the schools to check that everyone is deskwarming who is supposed to be. It's a little absurd, but it doesn't bother me at all -- realistically, I'd probably be idly surfing the internet anyway if I were at home, and they generally allow for climate control of the office.

(Due to the way my coteachers do things, I cannot really plan lessons very far ahead of time in most cases, and while I have plenty of time to be furthering my education, I lack the funds as a result of now paying for the education I already got. So, internet surfing fun time it is.)

Make the students deskwarm with you and if the parents complain, tell them to take it up with City Hall who won't give you a budget. Korean ajummas might not have the best of social manners but they're really good at dealing with the monkeys that work for the government.
