| My sister inlaw was the translater for Jorge after the police made the bust. Apparently he tried to eat his stash and went on some kind of crazy trip from all of the pills. Nobody is sure if it was a suicide attempt or not, but considering that he didn't try eating the pot, I think it was. |

I would bet it's the media and cops jacking up the cost to make it more sensational (if it's known it's only a worth a couple hundred total, the population might start questioning why it's so 'evil'). I honestly can't imagine a foreigner ever paying that. Since it says he was selling in clubs in Gangnam, I'm guessing most of his customers were Koreans. Of course I don't see their arrest reports in the article... |

I think it was a little bit of that, and a little about how here in Korea, people don't know what the going rate is. I didn't, so I couldn't understand the surprise over price before Cosmic Hum explained it... It's the same in most markets... people don't know how much a diamond costs to get from a hole in the ground to the store, so retailers can jack up the price as they like. |

The MBC report is really interesting (as usual):
1. They use the non-Korean translations to refer to the two drugs "마리화나" （marijuana) and "에로스" (eros) for ecstasy, rather than the usually Korean terms for the drugs--neither of which are new to Korea.
2. They mention that the drugs were sold in Itaewon. I haven't found any other sources that purport this, but I haven t seen many.
3. The reporter stands in Itaewon and captures several unsuspecting foreigners shopping in the background (poor tourists...).
4. They use a totally incoherent Korean-mixed to talk about how this drug is being obtained IN AMERICA and sold in Korea. Who knows if the subtitles are correct--I can't make heads or tails of what the guy is trying to say. TO BE HONEST, I DON'T THINK HE'S SPEAKING KOREAN AT ALL OR EVEN ENGLISH. IS HE SPEAKING ARABIC OR A SLAVIC LANGUAGE?
5. They show random footage in a dark dance club and a fluorescent "CLUB" sign, which has nothing to do with the report.

| I live in Toronto and there are quite a few Korean students here getting a taste for "herbal relief". It will be interesting to see how this impacts Korean attitudes in the future. |

Out of curiosity, what is the correct info on hair testing? Presumably it's more expensive.
I'm also wondering what effect, beyond those who would caught, it would have on people wanting to come to Korea to work? Would people begin to see this as too big brotherish, invasive etc...?

I can only imagine how high that would inflate the cost of the annual health check... and for something that most foreigners have no need of taking, ever >.< I doubt they'd put this into place if not solely because of the cost and having to get the equipment and everything to do it, and then getting that equipment to be in at least one hospital in every city... smh |

| Random drug testing sounds fantastic. I assume teachers will be paying out of pocket for this, no? And with a hair test it goes from cleaning yourself up prior to going to Korea and staing clean while there to a situation where you've got to be very, very careful for a long, long time prior to coming over. Do they really think that droves of people love the idea of living in Korea enough that they can make it a six month long hassle in order to come over? |

body hair grows slower than the hair that grows on your head and takes up to 1 year to replace itself. testing body hair can detect drug use for 1 year after it leaves your bloodstream.
independant studies show that hair testing uncovers 4 to 8 times as many users as urinalysis.
