Has anyone here heard of it? http://worldelectronicacarnival.com/?page_id=85
It's being held from August 10th-August 12th. I'd really like to know if anyone else is thinking of going, as it's going to be my first time in Korea (I'll be working with SMOE towards the end of August) and I'd like to meet some new people/make some new friends! |

There's a festival (I think it's called UMF) that I'll be going to instead the week before. |

Sorry, off-topic, but God I hate the term electronica. It was coined by tired old rockist music journalists in the nineties to describe a genre of music they completely failed to understand.
That UMF festival looks better, which isn't saying much really. When can we get dance music artists coming to Korea who are genuinely pushing the genre forward or who stay true to the roots of the genre rather than quasi-pop artists (Benny Benassi, Dj Tiesto), dance music dinosaurs (see any Global Gathering lineup of the last few years) or rip off merchants (Skrillex, whose brostep destroyed dubstep)? |

One problem, is that when any decent international artists who are the real deal come to Korea, hardly anyone shows up. It can't be very encouraging for those who attempt to make it happen. It seems that only big, well established, commercial performers with their own font are able to draw the crowds, and it would be an awfully big financial risk for a promoter to bring out any top shelf artists for the connoisseurs. I don't really think there are that many people deeply rooted in electronic music in this country. There are definitely some, but it is a relatively small section of the population and certainly not enough to justify the type of events a lot of us crave. It's all very new here and unfortunately a lot of the stuff that works outside of Korea doesn't translate very well here. A conversation about the possible reasons for this would be a long one.
Just out of interest, who would you like to see make an appearance over here? |

The first two that come to mind:
Josh Wink played a fantastic set to an absolutely tiny crowd at the World Dj Festival this year, possibly the smallest turnout for any set I saw at the festival. The next day he flew to Detroit and played on the main stage to a packed crowd at DEMF. I couldn't believe the poor turnout to his set at the DJ festival.
Juan Atkins played here in 2009. It was great party but again, a very small crowd. |

I'd like to see late 90s early 2000s dnb make a comeback... dubstep is ok, but I dunno... I'm not into the scene enough to know how or why it happened but popularity ruined dubstep - for me at least..
Id like to hear Dara, Tech Itch, Andy C, Bad Company, Usual Suspects... my very short list... |
