I am an ESL teacher in the U.S. who will be going to grad school next year and studying Korean. I lived in Japan last year and studied Chinese in China. I found that I could learn a lot of colloquial stuff from pop music, the problem sometimes was finding stuff that was not inane (as U.S. top 40 stuff generally is, too).
For those who know Chinese or Japanese pop music, the stuff I like (at least fairly well) is Wong Faye, Aijing, Faith Yang, Ding Wei, sometimes A-Mei, Cui Jian, Hei Bao, Huar, and on the Japanese side, Utada Hikaru, Chara, UA, Love Psychedelico, The Blue Hearts, Eastern Youth.
I have heard BoA and find her at least listenable, but can't find many of her songs in Korean (rather than Japanese). I bought a Lena Park CD but don't really like it. I would prefer Korean CDs that aren't all ballads, but that have at least a little variety in tempo, style, etc..
Does anyone have any recommendations for CDs? And places to buy online? What about Korean music on internet radio?
Thanks! |

My top three Korean acts:
Seo Taeji rules! Some of my Korean friends have trouble understanding what he's saying, though, so maybe he's not the best bet for learning the language.
Pia is pretty good, if you're into something a little heavier.
Nell - Some people say they sound a bit like Radiohead. They sound a bit like Hawksley Workman to me. |

For Korean music, try: Windows Media. I have seen some there. YOu could use bugsmusic if you read Korean. Also, type Korean singers into a search engine and see if there are videos online. I currently recommend anything from 1TYM. |

I'm bumping this thread because I know there must be more of you who listen to k-pop or other Korean music (even just as background noise). I am really interested in two categories of Korean music here:
1) Music that is GOOD, whether the lyrics are clear or not, that has a bit of rock, electronica, or good hip hop
2) K-pop that isn't that great but semi-interesting and listenable, that is good for learning Korean, has repetitive, often-used phrases
Thank you! |

Alright I'll give you some but I know I'm going to get flamed:
I like:
*baby Vox(the new song is shocking though)
*Jewellry(very light and bubbly)
*Lee Jeong Hyun(crappy techno but i like it)
*MC Sniper(good rapper- have been flamed before for saying this though)
*Lexy(Luxury and Sexy )
*Ohm Jeong Hwa (Bit older but has been around a long time and sets trends in the K-pop scene here)
Thats off the top of my head.
For the learning Korean bit. Almost every song talks about the same issue of love and losing and finding it.
Ask a poster called Mithradates as he learned Korean through music. I think he used Jaeurim. Anyway, i hope that helps. |
