Interesting. I wonder if all those Korean Man United fans will suddenly switch allegiance and whether QPR will automatically join Bolton and Sunderland as first choices for the televised EPL games. It'll make pretty dull viewing if those three teams form the basis of the Korean coverage from now on. |

I don't know about that... would Koreans 'support' a team outside of the top 3? |

I wonder if Park will get regular starts for QPR? Could be a sleeper 5th midfielder fantasy option if the switch to QPR sends his price to 4.5-5.0 |

My missus told me that a lot of people on the Korean web portals are already switching their allegiance because not only did Man U sell the Korean demi-god PJS, they have done the unthinkable and signed a dirty Jap. And the apologists wonder why people take the mickey out of Koreans sometimes... |

I kind of agree with Squire though, I think t's unlikely they'll want to 'support' any team trying to avoid relegation. Maybe they'll switch to Man City or Barcelona. |

I dunno, is it the same? For us we usually root for a team, often one we have a geographic connection to. But for Koreans and EPL? There's not really that tie.
I mean look at Auto Racing, especially NASCAR, I'm way more loyal to driver than I am to team or manufacturer (although there are definitely fans that have those loyalties). As a yank my loyalties are largely fantasy based. Who do I love? Whoever is on form and can get me clean sheets or a brace. Favorite players? Danny Simpson, Michael Vorm, and Shane Ferguson. Of course that's only as long as they are priced at 4.0 I don't have that overriding passion. On the other hand I don't worship Clint Dempsey and I wouldn't burn a Fulham jersey if they sold him.
Bought the closest thing for player-love would be Rasheed Wallace. That was tough when he went to the Celtics, but I would. Other than him though, I can't really picture a player in any team sport outside of Auto Racing that I'd override love of team for love of player. |

Most British fans often can't get their head around people being primarily interested in a foreign league. We tend to think, if they're real football supporters they should be paying to see FC Seoul or Pohang Steelers and supporting the local community. Otherwise they're just armchair pundits who'll follow whoever's doing well at the time. Nothing wrong with that either but the two types of fan will have little in common, so there'll be a bit of banter between them |

I arrive in Korea just days before the English season starts and I will not be able to go and see my team (Wolves) play. Now they are in the second division, it will be a problem catching their games by web streams, etc. Never a problem when they were in the Premier League.
As I will be in Korea for a year, I'm going to have to try and support a K-League team despite having no loyalty/connection to a team or location.

Long answer is that Koreans support PJS and not the team.
Hardly any Koreans I talk football with knows where Man Utd's home ground is, who the manager is, what their nickname is. I try to tell them it is Manchester United not 맨유, Sir Alec Ferguson, not 퍼거순: they don't give a whit. Next I'll try to tell them: PJS plays for Gers and their home is in West London. They'll tell me 호나우두 plays for 래이알. Real what?! Arrrh! What can you do? I have been spoilt by the BBC football commentators. |

Ther only Koreans I ever hear mention PJS are those in the 30-50 age range, and then it's only because it seems like its something to talk about when faced with a foreigner! But the kids seems to know a lot more. Most of the boys at my high school are split between Man Utd, and Chelsea, then Man City and then Arsenal. I never hear about PJS from them. I don't think they're gonna automatically switch to QPR, but I will be annoyed if the Korean TV Chanels switch to QPR coverage! |

Yeah, the younger kids are all over the place. At my local middle school all the kids wear Man City shirts and were ecstatic after the 6-1 whipping, the 1-0 game to set everything up, and the last kick of the game to win it all. There were some butt-hurt fans of Park Ji Sung in elementary though. I mean these boys could name the rosters of every team in the EPL. I think this may have to do with video games.
But yeah, you take a poll of "Favorite soccer player/team" from kids these days and you'll get teams ranging from Arsenal to Man U to Barcelona to Bayern to Real Madrid to Chelsea to Inter. Players will be all over the map too with the usual suspects involved.
I think the younger kids are used to seeing Korean players play for EPL/Bundesliga/SPL now and don't quite have the emotional attachment to seeing a Korean player break through to the EPL or MLB for that matter. |
