| Hi everyone...I have a BA degree and have taught a non-English course for the past four years here in the US. I have started applying to a few different recruiters, but think a BA alone may not cut it. I'm looking for a 120+ hour online TESOL or TEFL course that is legitimate and will be acnowledged in the Korean education system? I would prefer doing an in person course like CELTA, but I do not have the ability to attend all of the onsite courses offered in my area. Any suggestions as well as pro's and con's of each would be greatly appreciated. |

No such thing as online CELTA.
If all you want is the pay bump, get something from ONTESOL. |

If you are just going to work in Korea then it won't matter which one.
The cheapest (ITTT / ONTESOL ? ) will suffice.

Actually, yes, there is:
http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/celta-online/index.html
But it does have one component that needs to be done at a center so it is not entirely on-line.

Yeah, you'd still need to do your 20hrs of practicum on-site. |

Would you do it at their centers or can you do that at your current school and just have some teachers observe you and sent the paperwork? |

| Suffer the pain to get the gain, and do the CELTA. After gettting this qualification you will not be sorry. If pressure is difficult to handle, just do the CELTA in the part time mode. This certificate has world respect and is worth the effort. |

Thanks for the information on a few TESOl programs to look into. CELTA would be nice also, but I am trying to get into the fall semester with GEPIK and I figured seeking this extra layer of certification would help prepare me to teach a different subject matter and also help with a pay bump. As for CELTA...I would have to do the intensive full-time course as it is the only option available in my area. I wouldn't finish the in-class portion until the middle of September. I want to be in Korea by September and at this point, I am only being held up by the processing of my FBI Criminal background check. In order to do the practicum at my current school, I would have to risk staying longer and coming in February  |

| In addition to the pay raise, I would really like to make sure that I am prepared to teach English. Although I have four years of teaching experience, I do not have any experience teaching English. I am searching for a course that would be an overall "best bet" for improving lesson planning and teaching skills. Ontesol and ITTT looked OK, but I think a more rigorous program would be ideal. Any ideas? |

I strongly recommend a CELTA or Trinity certificate. The course is centered around lesson planning and teaching skills. It is intense at times and passing is not guaranteed. We had a 25 percent fail rate in my class and the class right before me had the same fail rate. If you want something easy then this is not for you.
My CELTA took 4 weeks and cost me 3k USD including airfare, course, accommodations etc. It all depends on your needs but for me it was well worth it. When it comes to training, the more you are willing to put in the more you can take away. |
