I recently went in and had a chat with them because I'm leaving soon.
Apparently, they've been reporting my salary at 100,000 less than what my actually salary is. Also, they've been deducting 5,000 more out of my salary compared to what NPS told me they're giving them.(Not terribly fussed about the 5,000 a month difference)
Is this worth causing some conflict over? I'm not terribly bothered about the money, but if they're doing this to everyone here, it's not right. Please don't come in here and lecture me, it's not really a moral conundrum, I just want to know if it's worth the hassle. Can there be negative repercussions? I'm in my 11th month. |

This one I am of two minds. One bastards for under reporting. Yet they only under reported by 100,000. I could understand if it was a whole lot more but. Hmmm. That is roughly 120k won you would miss out in the end.
You have to decide is this worth the fight. What will be the consequences if you get aggressive about this. You could find yourself losing out on a whole bunch more for 120k won. School being difficult, firing, losing out on good reference. Best approach is ask the school why this happened? See if they can come up with a good explanation or a alternative solution. Do so horse trading, maybe you could get something in kind.
Do double check on the undereporting. Maybe you did a miscalculation. Like you get more money in liu of an apartment so they report income before bonus. Or you renewed another year got the typical 100k bump up and school just did not notify NPS of the change.
Me, I would let things slide, but see if some sort of compromise could be done. Plus give a little warning to the next and other teachers.

My sentiments exactly. Thanks for the reply, we share a lot of the same thoughts on the subject.
Yeah, do I want to live in fear for the remaining month because I've reported them? I've talked to NPS and they told me what is being paid and what the academy reported my salary at. I am leaning towards letting it slide, but they've been real bastards and screwing us out of our break times too. I think if they try to switch my vacation time again(which they already asked me to move once since they're understaffed) I will complain or bring this up. |

The pension amount on 100,000 won per month @ 4.5% is 4,500 won per month. You state that they've been deducting 5,000 more per month than the amount paid in. This means that they've been deducting approximately the correct amount according to your correct salary but paying according to the 100k lower amount.
You are out either 5,000 or 4,500 won per month (we'd need exact figures to be sure which) that they deducted from you plus the required matching amount by your employer.
(I'm assuming from your post that you and your employer, other than the discrepancy, are each paying half of the Pension amount.)
It sounds more like an error than cheating. It's hard to imagine anyone trying to skim such a small amount. Perhaps the person who registered you was confused about your actual pay level when they reported your pay to the Pension office. Once reported, it is nearly impossible to get them to change - the Pension office hates changes and they whine and drag their feet when our school gives someone a raise.
If other teachers at your school verify their pension amounts you could find out if this was a one time error, or an attempt to skim a little each off a large number of individuals in order to embezzle a large amount. This kind of scheme, if it is embezzlement, is more typical of a crooked bookkeeper or clerk rather than a business owner.
Still, your boss owes you around 108,000 or 120,000 won (assuming you've been included on pension for a whole 12 month year).
I'd make a lighthearted mention of the difference. You could blame the Pension office:
"Gee, it looks like the Pension office made a mistake. You've been withholding based on XXX won but they've only been billing based on YYY won." Give them a chance to blame the Pension office and at least refund the part that was overwithheld from you.
And after all, it could actually be a mistake by the Pension office. They may have entered the amount wrong in their computer system or written it down wrong when it was reported to them. Since the monthly bills from the Pension office come combined for all employees, your employer (or the bookkeeper) may not have checked the itemization against payroll deductions and may not have noticed this minor discrepancy on the total bill.
Employers do not pay in the amount they withhold times two, but rather they pay in the amount on the monthly Pension bill. These two amounts should be the same, but not everyone reconciles such statements, even though they should. |

Common scam, but in this case with a much smaller reported reduction of the salary. My advice is as it's always been for this: Simply set aside the correct amount yourself, wait until a week or so before leaving, then go to the Pension Office with copy of contract, bank book, and (if available) pay statement. The Pension Office will take the ball from there and you'll get what's owed to you. Unlike the Labor Board, the Pension Office ha the authority to simply take money from the boss and they do use that authority. |

could it be a difference in something besides salary?
some schools - especially ps - tack on "extras" for other items, such as in a rural area, etc.
when I worked at poly they had like 3 kinds of "extras" added on - so my base was like 2.2, but overall I was paid 2.75 plus housing -
first person to ask is another foreign teacher, saving that, ask the business office. not available, go ahead and ask your director. it's really not that big a deal to request clarification and it may not even be deliberate. maybe the person in charge of accounting is taking a swipe at the boss - or just putting in the last teacher's salary, not knowing you make more.
in other words, there's all kinds of possibilities considering such a minor amount. it's not like half your salary or none at all - so go ahead and just step up and ask for an explanation. |

Do you pay more pension on these extras then or is it set no matter what? |
