Central and southern Korea could see more than 200 mm of torrential rains between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, as this year's seventh typhoon Khanun moves north toward the peninsula, the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast Monday.

The typhoon is not strong but a great deal of rain is expected.

Khanun arose about 870 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan around 3 p.m. Monday. It is moving north in the direction of Jeju at a speed of 50 km per hour with sustained winds of 18 m per second.

The typhoon will reach waters near Jeju on Wednesday afternoon and then turn toward the West Sea, the KMA predicted. It will be the first typhoon to affect Korea this year.

Meanwhile, seasonal rain will fall in some parts of Jeju and the south until Tuesday. The central part, including Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, will also be wet on Tuesday night, when hot and humid air flows in from the typhoon, and stay that way till Thursday.

IT IS NOT A TYPHOON (typhoons have winds over 64 knots, 112 kph or 74 mph), just a smallish, weakish tropical storm (winds under 50 knots) and will be weakening rapidly over Korea according to the Joint Typhoon warning center.

all its going to is add some more rain, a little bit of wind along the west coast, maybe some stronger thunderstorms and MAYBE an isolated tornado or two especially towards daejon and chuncheon (these things even when weak do produce tornadoes as anybody who lives along the gulf coast will tell you)

Downpours, gales forecast nationwide, as typhoon approaches
South Korea's weather forecasters warned of heavy rains of up to 200 millimeters and strong winds in the country's southern and central regions, as Typhoon Khanun is approaching the southern island of Jeju on Wednesday.

Khanun, meaning "jack fruit" in Thai, was 490 kilometers south of Seogwipo in the southern part of Jeju as of 6 a.m. on Wednesday and heading northwest along the country's western coast at 20 kilometers per hour, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

After passing waters some 80 kilometers off the country's western port city of Gunsan early Thursday, the storm is expected to land near North Korea's Hwanghae Province, it added.

The typhoon, the country's first tropical one of the season, is middle in scale with central pressure of 988 hectopascals and maximum wind speed of 25 meters per second, the KMA said, adding it is forecast to get weaker later in the day as it passes through warmer waters.

Heavy downpours and the gale will start on Jeju Island and in the southern part of the country Wednesday afternoon to continue through early Thursday, the KMA said. Up to 200 millimeters of rains are expected in some regions for two days, it added.

The central and eastern regions, including Seoul, will come under the full power of the tropical storm from late Wednesday, which will bring up to 80 millimeters of rain overnight, according to the forecaster.

"Heavy rains of 30 millimeters per hour and strong winds of 20 meters per second are expected in some regions," a KMA official said. "Extra precautions are required as the monsoon rains so far have already weakened ground."

The KMA has issued typhoon advisories in Jeju Island and waters off the island to come into effect at 12:00 p.m.

I just got a warning email from the US Embassy, so it looks like it'll be heavy rain. I just hope it's okay by Saturday, as I've got plane tickets.

Think it's just hitting the mainland now as it's tanking down here in Samcheonpo.

No wind at all, the rain has stopped. Typhoons are really weak by the time they reach Korea, pretty rare that one does damage.

The doppler radar shows it nicely almost real time. It's about to reach Jeju now.

By the time typhoons reach Korea they're usually more rain than wind but they can certainly do damage. I've experienced a couple devastating storms in a dozen years here, & most years there'll be a storm or two that definitely hurts some region in Korea. Is that "pretty rare"?

Worst I've seen firsthand was Typhoon Rusa 10 years ago, when 36 inches of rain (910 mm) fell in just 30 hours. Dozens died. The damage was huge.

Interesting. I like classifications like this. I read recently a hurricane is winds of 75mph or more, so, given that, a typhoon is just a hurricane with rain, right?

That was a horrible storm indeed!

We had a bad storm in Busan in 2005 or 2006 and some people died as well. The flooding was very severe and numerous buildings were damaged.

It is true Typhoons are weakened when they reach Korea but the heavy rains and winds can and do still cause a lot of damage.

Wind is the showman of a hurricane / typhoon. It's the water that does the real damage.

Quick run down of typhoons that have affected Korea over the last few years:

Judy 1989
20 people killed, 47,000 left homeless, $1.8 million damage.

Caitlin 1991
2 people killed, $4 million damage.

Faye 1995
16 people killed, moderate damage from flooding.
Janis 1995
45 deaths and $428.5 million in damage

Yanni 1998
50 people killed.

Olga 1999
64 killed, 8,500 homes destroyed, 25,000 people homeless, $657 million damage.

Prapiroon 2000
46 people, $6 billion damage.

Rusa 2002
113 people killed, $6 billion damage.

Soudelor 2003
2 people killed, $12.1 million damage.

Maemi 2003
85 people killed, 282 ships were either sunk or were badly damaged, total industrial losses $577 million and $43 million agricultural damage.

Ewiniar 2006
62 people killed.

Nari 2007
20 people killed, $70 million damage.

Kompasu 2010
29 people killed, $58.3 million damage.

Not sure I'd use rare or little damage to describe that history...

A hurricane, typhoon and cyclone are all the same. Their names denote their location - hurricanes occur in the Atlantic, typhoons in South East Asia and cyclones in the Indian Sea.
