I notice YBM does NOT provide housing for their teachers. They do provide 10 million for key money. How much is rent? Isn't that hard for a new teacher to arrange? |

Wall Street Institute has the same sort of policy. They'll provide 10million for key money OR an extra 100k for rent per month.
This is from YBM's FAQ:
How do you assist incoming instructors with accommodation?
Upon arrival in Korea, teachers are placed in a motel/room near the designated YBM institute (up to 1 week). During this period, you are free to find your accommodation and location of choice. Your school will help with possible locations and real estate agents to start you off. YBM will assist new instructors with up to 10 Million Won Key Money for an apartment.
Further down is this:
How much can I expect to save per month?
This all depends on your personal lifestyle. Generally, teachers can save anywhere from 300, 000 to over 1, 000, 000 Won each month.
So take the salary they offer and subtract the amounts shown above. That's would be your living expenses inc. rent. |

They should be able to provide housing as well, they just don't pay for it. They make the arrangements but you have to pay a kind of large fee for the privilege.
The 10 million only applies to places where the owner of the place doesn't have a mortgage. So you can set out and find your own pad, but bear that in mind. |

Training at YBM is in the third week of the month preceding your start month. After training, they put you in a love motel and you get to go house hunting with a disinterested office guy. You'll be shown some real embarrassing shacks - make sure you don't take the one disinterested office boy pushes on you because the whole process has nothing to do with him and he just wants to get back to smoking behind the office building. They need the office guy because YBM issues key money, but only to places with no debt. No furniture allowance, so you'll want to hit the local recycling center or craigslist. Sometimes, you can get the outgoing teacher's old apartment. If you're in Seoul, try to live as close as possible to the school, as you may be coming into the school several times per day. Don't ask the trainer about housing - it's not his job and he will think your head is in the wrong place. Once you get situated in our housing, you can focus on the job at hand. It's too bad that YBM, who owns a large city's worth of real estate holdings, can't provide its hard-working teachers with quality housing so that they can focus on their classes. |
