I'm sorry if this has been posted already, but I can't find it anywhere!

I understand that there's a number of universities in Seoul that will hire English instructors who have at least 3 years of public school experience but no MA. It would be amazing to know which ones!

teachers in the practical English department don't need an MA to teach.

lecturers / profs will usually need a MA as a minimum.

saying you can't get a job without an MA is silly.

I think he means that Seoul is easily the most competitive area to look for a Uni job, and therefore you can expect an MA (or unparalleled connections) to be a requirement. This goes double at a time when there are fewer jobs than applicants even for public school positions. Attempting to get experience at a Uni in the middle of nowhere is a much more feasible plan if you are completely against getting an MA first.

Maybe my mistake, but the "get the picture" following "ANY" part seems peevish. A problem with interpreting what goes down in forums I suppose.

Wrong on that one, old bean. I work at a 2 year college even though I haven't completed my MA yet.

there are a couple of people running around at 2 year schools in Seoul without MA's I used to work with a couple at my last school but since they left they want MAs to replace them

The univ job market here is so competitive people with MA's (and no TESOL cert) and years of experience aren't getting interviews. 2 year schools a MA in anything is the norm 4 year better have an MA+ TESOL cert or an MA CELTA just to get in the door.

If you have a BA and ps experience my first post still holds unless its late and you are very lucky

Absolutely, but having connections is key in Korea. I got in through a guy working there (he doesn't have an MA either) and I've done a pretty good job so far, so hopefully they won't can me. However, i need to pull my finger out and get on with my MA, just in case.

Actually, thinking about it, I know or have met at least 5 or 6 guys without MAs working in 4 year unis in Seoul, including guys with only 1 or 2 years of ESL experience and not even a CELTA. It really is sometimes more about who you know.

Especially when "get the picture" is followed by a bunch of question marks.
But it's cool, because I actually appreciated that particular picture Smile

also some of these people without MAs who are working at "universities" are usually at unigwons...ie hagwons on campus and owned by the university but are pretty much hagwons, whether it involves teaching the university's students or faculty or whatever. Before I am shot down...this is NOT always the case but OFTEN.

Just from what I have known about some friends who were stoked to get a "university job" then realise they are working for less pay and holidays than me in public school.

Just because BA holders are allowed to apply for a post, doesn't mean they will get it. When it comes to a BA holder working at universities here, it is often (but not always) who you know, not what you know. Korea takes personal recommendations very seriously.
