I suggest you read your report that you linked to again. The information it contains has data from 2001-2005. The report that I linked has data from 2003-2004. A lot of your data is more outdated then mine, yet you accuse ME of defending outdated statistics...?
As for agreeing with the statistics no...I'm just looking at the problems with the methodology and data collection of your report. Basically most projections there are an estimate.
Now there's nothing wrong with estimations if that's all we have to go on. But that is not the case here. We have verifiable RECORDED statistics to go by...that being the case I'd rather go with that then estimations.
Anyway this whole debate started because you claimed that binge drinking is a bigger problem here then in the West. As of yet no stats have been provided that back up this particular assertation...at least for Korea. From page 16 of your report (Heavy Episode Drinking). There is no information available for Korea while North America is in the third highest category.

You're being totally ridiculous. They explain the methodology behind unrecorded alcohol in the report, and it's sound: in a country where making your own alcohol is very common, recorded alcohol use doesn't tell the whole story. And sorry, argue with the methodology all you want, but again, the WHO is the most reliable source you're going to find on the subject.

I agree. And I posted a link to a report by the WHO which shows that North Americans drink more than Koreans per capita.
You yourself said your link didn't state that.
As for making one's own alcohol being very common here...homebrewing is legal in most Canadian provinces and most of the States. And has been for a long time.
As for the rest of your post...I'm not interested in suppositions or anecdotal evidence.
I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree on this. |

What? I already replied to you. Sigh* go to page 5.
Whereupon you will see that it was YOU who ended the conversation, not me.

Yes, unfortunately there's not been a great deal going on this week in my usually-jam-packed schedule. So I've had to find my amusement here. And yeah, I know I did say that it wasn't worth continuing OUR particular little exchange. However I am curious about your response to the poster TJ's reply to your views on foreigner-marriage in Korea. |

I think what the author brought up is hard for me to comment without having all the facts. I do know that drinking is encouraged too much in South Korea and also Britain. The author spoke of wild behavior in England. According to statistics, Canadians and Americans drink a lot less alcohol than people in Britain. However, when people come to Korea, where even more alcohol is consumed, it can be a problem. That said, all of us have degrees and the vast majority of us act responsibly, but some young teachers who come with public schools come to orientations where there's alcohol. There shouldn't be any alcohol at such functions, and I wasn't at Wando, but I wonder who organized at that party? Those who organized it should have informed people where the bathrooms were. They should have anticipated any possible problems. In that case, you had many Westerners congregating together on a beach with all that alcohol and with some not knowing where the bathroom and not walking five minutes to the bathroom that was working. Of course, the locals would be livid, but that's the fault of the organizers to some extent, unless I'm mistaken. And maybe if you had a large group of Koreans drinking somewhere at a foreign beach who knows what could happen. I think the writer is so embarrassed, understandably, of the bad behavior of some of the expats. So are we, but they represent only a minority of us, and a small one. He did us all a disservice and seem to say we somehow deserve the prejudice that comes toward us. Many Koreans don't need much of a reason to hate us. You choose to hate if you want regardless of your nationality.

| I suspect he was just trying to make a name for himself, for whatever reason. Didn't someone say he has a blog? That would be the ticket. |
